A genetic condition, that often leads to cardiac arrhythmias. If there is no family history, or the patient does not see the right subspecialist, delay in diagnosis can be 10-20 years from symptom onset. Many are never diagnosed correctly.

From a distance, he very likely had eyelid myotonia in retrospect.
 
Gottfried died of recurrent ventricular tachycardia caused by myotonic dystrophy type 2, his friend and publicist Glenn Schwartz said.

Not quite the household name but Tom McCarthy (an often linemate with Ciccarelli and Broten with the North Stars) has passed at the age of 61.

A friend's landlord had a similar situation. A genetic trait (no known family history) made his hear more susceptible to a similar condition. One day, while on vacation, one of his aortic valves blew up. He literally clutched his chest and dropped dead.


Life is precious and fragile.
