He was the first truly nationally accepted purveyor of pure stupidity and viciousness. Father Coughlin was close, but Rush put it over the top and infected the entire right of American politics.
He may not be why people in the right are so heartless and crass, but he is why they are so dumb. He and Ailes and Murdoch made that the coin of the realm. He made the fat schoolyard bully the epitome of the Republican party, and then it was just a matter of time until Dump found his home furnished and move-in-ready.
