Ara Parseghian, 94

I will always remember him as being an answer in many of the weekly crosswords that came in what we called the "tv guide" (not to be confused with TV Guide).

Ara Parseghian, 94

While my bias about Ara should be obvious, he really was one of those public figures who was as good a man as advertised, generous, humble and funny. In an era when we were a little more naive and public figures were often revered much more than they deserved to be, Parseghian lived up to his public persona on a daily basis. In one of the greatest coaching feats ever (and probably a better job than in either of his title seasons) he took a bunch of players who were an awful 2-7 in 1963 and in 1964 came within 90 seconds and an earlier disputed holding call of finishing an undefeated, national championship year. His passing makes me sadder than I normally am when a public figure I may admire dies.

His only public flaw was that he encouraged Rudy a little too much. But before Rudy was "Rudy" he wasn't nearly the dick he eventually became.

Ara is the line of demarcation between old Notre Dame, a unique, traditional, midwestern Catholic salt of the Earth institution, and new Notre Dame, an ACC program with a TV contract.

This has not been a positive evolution.

@CTVNews: Canadian Goldy McJohn, founding member of Steppenwolf, has died at 72 http://ctv.news/Eek33TZ

He was the keyboard guy with the Darnell Hillman afro

One of the musicians in the Toronto music scene of the 60s who made it big. Some guys who backed Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins during his heyday in TO and were called "The Hawks" had some success......as "The Band." :)

Dang, I spent part of my misspent youth in every one of those bars in the video.

I have the feeling that Val Kilmer isn't going to be here much longer. Too many rumors if cancer, plus he's cancelled appearances.

Cancer is well known at this point. It's a matter of time...

I think there's too much smoke for there not to be a fire at this point re: his health. Sadly, I think we're going to see something soon.

I think it was recent that he finally admitted it (April?), but it's been heavily speculated for awhile because of the reasons Hammer stated. Bummer.

It was recent. Given his ego, on and off stage, and that is also well known....no surprise at the late admission.
