For "current" possible icons, Dave Grohl in the music world. I don't think he'll transcend like Prince or Bowie, though, despite his influences and talent.

Ummmm, no. Average, middle of the road, mid-level talent. Certainly no icon. Eddie Vedder sits higher than him.

Grohl doesn't approach Prince/Bowie but he's every bit the musical talent that Vedder is. Played every instrument on the Foo's first record because he didn't have a band yet, teaching himself to play guitar etc. Seriously dafuq?

So he can play a bunch of instruments. His music is mundane and pedestrian.

Cobain couldn't play worth crap, but what he came up with runs rings around Grohl creatively.

Ok, so I know your opinion doesn't count in my world (and I love Vedder). :p

As for rap.....singular....LL Cool J. But it's been mostly groups that have transformed rap in modern day. NWA, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan. Even going back to Run DMC.

Re: DEAD THREAD 2017: "This guy here is dead!"..."Cross him off, then!"

I'm saying more recent than, say, Thriller.

Madonna, certainly. Others? Although rap as a whole is earth-shaking there is no single transformative figure for the outside cultural world. Biggie really only reached mas consciousness after death (how ironic). Kanye thinks he is but he's really, really not.

Ummmm... What about Tupac?

Ummmm... What about Tupac?

I didn't really like either of them overall, but Biggie was better.

Biggie's better (well, Biggie has more style but Tupac has more heart) but they're both great (Rakim is far better than either for that matter), but still only within their scope. NWA and PE as collectives transcend rap and hip hop and become real cultural forces, but even then... I still think rap has not produced an icon.

It should have and I suppose it's not too late, but maybe because it went big before it left the street the base of that pyramid is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry broad, and healthier for it.

For a singular rap icon overall, you have to go WAY back to Grandmaster Flash or DJ Kool Herc. Maybe Afrikaa Bambaataa. And even then, those folks are severely limited to that style of music only. They didn't carry over.

Grandmaster Flash for the tech, Afrikaa Bambaataa for the politics, and DJ Kool Herc to pull shawty in. That's why they're called the Holy Trinity. :-)

Q-Tip has one of the best rapping voices in history. So smooth. But icons? Not even close.

Sure thing. We'll agree to disagree.

Icons within rap? Certainly they are. Tribe is great, I can't for the life of me understand why people think Wu-Tang is better.

But outside of rap nobody has even heard of Tribe, and they have heard of a few of the 25,000 guys in Wu-Tang. When Phife Dawg died I was the only person at my work who knew who he was. The younger (read: under 60) people would have at least heard of ODB.
