There's a smell about the whole thing.

The body is decaying.

Seriously, was Whitey talking to the Feds and his (former) associates decided that this was unacceptable behavior?

Or, were the Feds amiable to removing pond scum from the prisoner rolls.

I would guess that Whitey had some enemies on the inside.

Sounding like inmates took him to a blind spot, beat him, and tried to gouge his eyes out. Also, apparently he wasn't fully processed yet when this happened.

I've got his rookie card somewhere in one of my albums.

Yes, but it wasn't in great shape when I bought it years ago. The other cards you've seen are definitely in better condition.

Probably not. Once the grading system became accepted, condition of cards got HARSH. The "highlight" cards are obviously the exception. Hell, even my 1993 (?) Brodeur auto'd Upper Deck (Be A Player) was only the 3rd one of that card to get a 10 auto/9 condition...in 1998.
