Re: Dead Thread 2017-18: Fare Thee Well!!

Thankfully I didn't have to memorize "The Cremation of Sam McGee" the same way McCain did. Wow. Just WOW! One has to admit he was an impressive man regardless of one's political viewpoint.

Anecdotally, I found a lot of cancer Pts go through palliative chemoTx/XRT for their families rather than themselves. Regardless, it DOES take some major yarbles to say stop.

Charles Krauthammer also stopped treatment for his cancer.

Re: Dead Thread 2017-18: Fare Thee Well!!

I’ve been mulling what to say about McCain now that I’ve had time to collect my thoughts.

I think the nicest thing I can say is that McCain was cut from the same cloth as Paul Wellstone. I deeply respected both men. During my conservative phase I respected the memory of Wellstone even if I didn’t agree with him. Likewise today, I didn't and certainly still don’t agree with a lot of what McCain voted for but I always thought he was one of the good guys.

The man was an honest to god war hero. We throw that term ‘hero’ around a lot today, but he defines the word. He put honor and country above everything and he lived it every day of his life.

I’m deeply hurt by his passing and I don’t see someone on the right of his character willing or much less able to carry his legacy. RIP Senator. You’ll be sorely missed.

I can honestly say the same about Wellstone, from a conservative perspective. I didn't agree with him, but dam, he was a stand-up guy.

McCain was a politician and as such carried with him a lot of the same faults as so many others. I won't romanticize that history but on the whole from my chair he was an upstanding man that perhaps didn't always stick to his convictions. Yet I think history will reflect on him far more positively than not and rightfully so. Sad to hear of his passing could honestly use more men like him regardless of policy.

NPR just did a great show on Fresh Air that played interviews from 2005 and 08 (I think). I may not have a greed with him on certain things but he was articulate and a gentleman. I miss the kind of politician who at least had the veneer of class.

Re: Dead Thread 2017-18: Fare Thee Well!!

The Recessional Hymn for Sen. McCain's funeral was "I vow to thee my country".

"I vow to thee my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love.
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best.
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there'es another country I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know.
We may not count her armies, we may not see her king,
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering.
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace."

Rest in peace, Senator.

RIP Turd Ferguson

SNL had a Celebrity Jeopardy script planned where Norm MacDonald would get thrown off the show, and get replaced by the real deal himself...only for the real Burt to start making even MORE inane statements.
