Well, that sucks. :(

He's been down the hole before though, and not just when he was shooting dope in the 80s. There was a dark chapter in one of his books about a trip to St. Maarten shortly after he got divorced from his first wife, where he contemplated driving his rental car off a cliff every night.

Yes and no. Yes we are f-ing up when people with mental illness are allowed to possess fire-arms. There needs to be a system in place to deal with that and yes that is very complicated. No in cases of Spade and Bourdain. Healthcare is readily available and the stigma that went along with metal illness is most gone. Like any problem, the patient needs to want the help in the first place and often times they don't see the problem inside themselves. Spade was on meds and seeing a professional. I don't know about Bourdain. Ironically I was listening to Linkin Park yesterday and you can easily hear the pain in Chester's words and voice. It's so sad and it's very hard to listen to them anymore. The song came up on the shuffle. I watched Bourdain all the time, his shows were some of the best on TV. I feel just sick about his buddy Eric who found him, they were like brothers.

I know very well that depression is a disease, I suffer from it.

Being suicidal is a disease.

Committing suicide with young kids is the parental equivalent of being a school shooter.

You don't weep for the school shooter, who is also undoubtedly mentally ill. Save your tears for the daughter.

I think some medications for depression will be linked to higher suicide rates.

This sucks. He had a real gift for phrasing and storytelling and was an inspiration for shows such as Chef's Table which is one of the best food video anthologies I've ever watched. The wife and I enjoyed No Reservations, The Layover and recently we've been catching up on missed episodes of Parts Unknown including his visit to Manila. Gotta imagine Eric Ripert is having a hard time.

No. No. No. There is an awful shortage of psych providers and there is a huge problem with insurance NOT covering treatment (or covering it for an inadequate amount of time ~ treatment is no based on diagnosis or treatment but on a set time period), having higher copays for 'specialists' or having very few providers who take a particular insurance. Wait times in our part of the world are upwards of 6-8 weeks. You can go to the ER, get admitted and they discharge you without an appointment for f/u because there is no available appointment. Primary care can treat basic depression, anxiety, etc but when you have someone who is suicidal that needs someone in the correct field.

There is plenty of stigma about seeing a psych and being depressed. This esp for those who are well respected. All sorts of issues- they feel inadequate, like they can't seek help and look weak, certain cultures do not believe in seeking help. Yes it is fashionable for a subset of the population to brag about seeing a therapist but for public figures it ain't always easy.

If you have someone who is extremely depressed they can be incapacitated to the point they can't get organized enough or get enough energy to make a plan and then act on it. When you give a med it may lift the depression enough the person can get organized and have enough energy to actually make a plan and act. That is why you always ask about suicidal ideation when you are starting the med. You also contract for safety. This is true of just about every med. The loss of lethargy happens before the lifting of depression or anxiety.

There is also an anti-smoking med that has a possible side effect of SUICIDAL THOUGHTS. No thanks, I'll stick to the cancer sticks.

Chantix- you can have crazy thoughts/mightmares on that stuff. Makes some people very irritable and agitated. Most people don't have a problem. Some people do well until they increase dose to 2 mg. A lot of them are fine if you keep them at 1 mg. or drop them back to 1 mg. A few yrs ago some famous person went ballistic and the neighbor shot them for trespass.

On the other hand it is a wonder drug for some.

Yep, that's the one. It's amazing what the FDA approves these days.

Back to the subject: mental health.....some designer dies, nothing really in the news. A few mentions. Bourdain dies...ZOMG ALL THE ATTENTION HERE AND NOW! That's an issue, IMO.

Former coworker of mine had extremely personal and vivid nightmares as soon as he started Chantix. He quit taking it after a few weeks.

I got to see Bourdain give a talk and answer audience questions on his book tour stop in Detroit a couple years ago. Tours are always an exhausting business, and that was presumably on top of his travel/filming schedule that year. He was cheerful and engaging enough, but obviously going through the motions every night.

Not being crass, but if he wanted help, I doubt the means, nor the access to providers were issues at this point in his life. He was making CNN money, and they undoubtedly have plans and people in place for that scenario. To me, just reading his books and watching his shows, it always seemed like Tony never found what he was looking for in this world. He'd hop on one train, ride it hard, and then jump from it when he got bored. Didn't matter if it was thrill-seeking (esp. heroin back in the day), multiple careers, two divorces, etc. He always seemed to embody the Hemingway/Kerouac/Thompson attitude of trying everything, writing about it, and then going out on his own terms.

You can do that sh-t until you have kids. Once you have kids your life is no longer your own to throw away until they're mature enough that it won't scar them for life.

Generally speaking, I tend to agree, but that's easy for you and I to say when we're not at the rock bottom of the pit. Major depression is inherently a selfish disorder when you're in the midst of an episode.

I mean, some deaths are just going to garner more attention than others. Robin Williams was huge because everyone loved his work and had it touch them in some way. Bourdain had his books and his TV shows were a way for many to be able to travel the world if they didn't have the means to do it. Spade made some very nice but also very expensive clothing and accessories. There are going to be some barriers of exposure entry there.

I completely agree with you that there should be more attention to paid to these types of issues when they do occur, but for them to resonate and create change there has to be some connection, and Bourdain just had more of that.

Absolutely. No one is discounting the value of a life, but level of fame is, and has always been a factor when it comes to reporting on deaths.

Chantix is a low-grade antidepressant. All antidepressants have suicide warnings. I believe the thought is that when you’re severely depressed and already suicidal, the motivation to even do that is hard to find. Once you start taking the antidepressants it can help you find the motivation to do things. In some cases that means the motivation to take your own life.
