Dont you get it, it is all part of the problem. Guns AND people. You need them both to have crap like this.

But yeah guns certainly arent part of the problem of a mass shooting...

(and still not advocating banning guns)

Guns have been around for more than 150 years. The mentality has changed. To use a very simple example, instead of fists, gangs use guns. More kills now. It's a dam shame, and a tragedy. The gun USED to be a last resort (even in the Wild West). Now? It's often the first choice. Ain't the gun's fault, nor the law's fault.

No more excuses.

First, guns are more dangerous than other weapons and need to be considered as such. The purpose of the second amendment is to protect citizens. If knives are just as effective as guns...then why don't we just allow citizens to have knives to defend themselves against the government. OK...are we on the same page that guns are faar more dangerous than knives or other substitutes?

Second, a gun is fired there are two causes: 1) Person shooting gun 2) the gun. We shouldn't just say there is one cause...because there are two causes. So why would we not do our best to solve the problem by working both sides of the problem? So address the people side - extremism, mental health - and the gun side - figure out gun control for once and for all.

A decade ago, I was pretty much alone on this site in looking to take action on guns...and lots of deaths later, we've done nothing on them.

Cocaine, meth, heroin, etc are banned, too. Opiods are also heavily regulated.

Banning does nothing. We all know something different has to happen. We know (or should realize) that guns will always be present. So, let's filter out as many irresponsible owners as we can, hopefully (yeah right, but I'm an optimist) change the attitude in this country, and go from there.

I'll agree that banning likely gets us nowhere, but isn't it naive to think that we can possibly "filter out as many irresponsible owners as we can"? Especially if heavy restrictions aren't part of whatever solution we can come up with?

Live by the sword, die by the sword. If our culture continues to love the gun as it does, isn't it naturally going to gravitate towards the gun to solve/create our problems? Mass shooters sure seem to think that way.

I agree with that, however I am willing to get more stringent with some of the loopholes, and frankly ENFORCE THE FRIGGIN' LAWS WE HAVE IN PLACE. This would NOT have prevented the FLA tragedy, but it might have prevented past one, or prevent a future one.

Did I say hunting was bad? No. But it is killing something, which again is the purpose of a gun.

So what laws should be put into place to prevent the next tragedy that manages to be "legal" in the sense of getting mass killing machines?

If the current laws would not prevent this, they would not prevent another. So then what?

Like a fanatic, a doctrine of hate, and a bomb vest and a couple guns.

Or like an irresponsible person, alcohol, and a motor vehicle. <-- That one happens every 52 minutes in the US. Shall we ban the booze and cars too? That's equally preventable.
