No, it's your job to call me a liar, no matter what I actually do say. I can always count on you to disagree with anything I post, no matter how reasonable or accurate it is. Your personal dislike for me overrides your common sense.

Or, maybe you're just a dumb-a $ $? :D

President BassAle's proposal

Repeal 2nd Amendment. Replace with something that makes sense in the 21st century (and isn't as poorly written).

0) All guns registered, all private sales go through licensed broker that conducts background checks. Unless you are a dealer, limits on the number and frequency of gun purchases.
1) Handguns require permit to own and carry. Have one in your possession during any crime and you're banned from ever legally owning a firearm. Additional time on sentence for possessing firearm during crime.
3) Semi automatic long guns require permit to own.
4) High capacity magazines are banned
5) No ammunition purchase without proof of ownership of registered firearm matching ammunition being purchased.
6) Body armor and other tactical gear is illegal to own.

Mandatory buyback for any gun made illegal through legislation (like assault weapons ban). Voluntary buyback for everyone else to reduce number of guns in circulation.

I like it. Two points for me are 1) Anybody with a diagnosed mental illness required psychiatric prescribed drugs can not own a firearm, or can there be firearms in the dwelling they live in (call it the Lanza amendment after his idiot mother). 2) High frequency weaponry is banned. Nobody needs an AK-47 to hunt or any other assault rifle. This is why the massacres are so deadly in so little time. IMHO you can do both of these things and not run afoul of any 2nd amendment concerns. The first point will also require complete background checks of course.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

circa 1988:

Dick Cheney: "Why do people take such an instant dislike of me?"

Howard Baker: "It saves time."

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

Wire services reporting that Mrs. Shooter pledged support to ISIS/L.

You can't hunt with a AK47 now, its a full automatic, not a semi auto. You need a federal permit to own any full auto now as far as I know

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

So how many guns were sold after all the pundits and all the pols talked about more gun control? I'll bet guns and ammo fly off the shelves this weekend

The number of households with guns are down. Its the same people just buying another gun. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...shows/&usg=AFQjCNFqoJA9QxkUvzEK3cdQC5AFUhuWiA

To me it seems like kinda wierd that gun owners go out and buy three more guns whenever there's talk of gun control. Its why us non gun owners wonder about gun owners.

In truth, I never spend time wondering about gun owners and I've never once owned a gun.

To be fair, the reasonable gun owner might have multiple guns for multiple purposes:

Animal hunting, depending on the animal, suggest different guns
Personal protection (can't really go around carrying a shotgun)
True gun collectors who appreciate the history and evolution of guns throughout history but may not actually use said guns

And it's like other equipment fetishes: camera gear, woodworking, camping, gopher bobbleheads . . . . Once people get interested, they just like to shop and buy the stuff.

That makes sense. Its just odd when it spikes after talk of gun control.

Ahhhh...I get it!

My understanding of the news coverage thus far is that the weapons in both the California and CT school incident were purchased legally. Sure seems like a lot of ammo was fired in a little amount of time so I'm chalking that up to automatic weaponry. Regardless of the categorization, these types of weapons should not be in the hands of non-military or non law enforcement individuals.

Re: Days Since Last Mass Shooting: 0

I have a feeling it was a bit of both. Or.....they (hubby and wife) were planning a much larger event and then there was a workplace issue that caused the idiot to snap so they went there and started shooting and using up all the fun stuff they were stockpiling for some other event. It just seems like the oddest place for a terrorist attack, you know?

I looked at the list of banned "assualt rifles" in California, I didn't see their particular guns. I think the reason is smaller caliber?? But any semi auto is going to allow you to fire as fast as you can pull trigger and reload. I assume they had some big clips?

It was two Muslims shooting up a Christmas party, simple as that. But also very complex in its roots. The Atlantic had a great story a while back about the history of ISIS and the mistakes people make in thinking of them as a few fringy extremists. They have so much power because they follow a very real organized theology that's been developed over a thousand years. Their actual religion is to bring about the end times through killing and war. We are actually become followers of the ISIS brand of Islam when we retaliate with guns and bombs and boots on the ground. It's a fulfillment of what they've been preaching all along: that the world is in a holy war. The more war, the more ISIS-Islam. The only way they'll be defeated is through development and support of an alternative worldview - education, food, money, jobs, stability, peace, love... The U.S. has a much bigger role to play than bombing them. But the real solution might be too politically difficult for us to contribute meaningfully to; it's actually easier to go on bombing them.
