If we can't support the worst kinds of free speech, then the First has absolutely no value.

It encourages the right...to attack 99.9% of innocent Muslim Americans...which in turn causes mainstream Muslims to be open to extremist arguments. The stupid thing is nobody is claiming racists/bigots are breaking the first amendment...but you must defend them anyways.

In this case- standing behind the first amendment rights to take away the same amendment rights of others.

Use free speech to deny freedom of religion. FTW!

Don't forget that they complain that people also use their right to free assembly to protest them back and then boycott them. That's always funny.

Yes seriously. The first is not on trial here. Nobody is saying Nazis can't be Nazis. Not one person.

But when the discussion of whether such racist comments are appropriate...and the first amendment are brought out, it diverts the issue from whether racism appropriate to whether its legal. And folks get duped into believing that its a first amendment issue and start to believe 'yeah, well there is the first amendment'. Racist commentary legality is not an issue, the question is whether we should approve of it...but the question of legality (when the first is not involved) provides the cover bigotry/racism needs to thrive.

Because if we can't say Neo-Nazis are really smart, funny people without any sort of social consequence then the emailz! have won. Won't somebody please think of the emailz!?

Back on topic, the globalist in me would like to point out that this now makes two consecutive terrorist attacks in which a knife was used instead of a gun and they resulted in a combined zero victim fatalities. It looks like the weapon used does make a big difference. Like I've said time and again, I'll always take my chances against a knife over a gun.

I'm sorry, are you asking me to explain and defend the actions I don't commit, performed by people with whom I do not align myself?

I asked you a question as to why you left off a choice of action. You stated three options afforded people by the First Amendment, and I offered a fourth option. People can quietly condemn actions, showing such condemnation at the ballot box or in monetary support against those they condemn. There's nothing in the First Amendment compelling people to make there opinions be know in a loud fashion.

Also, I enjoy the fact that people can make their racist and bigoted comments. They allow me to self segregate them from my life.

Uh, attacking a specific religion that was brought up in the example? Did you miss the example of the hate speech against Muslims? Which is attacking someone else's first amendment rights justifying it by the first amendment. Ironic as heck.

Much like Nazis attacking Jews for the sake of them being Jewish.

Or, you know, hand wave them away with comments about "context" that don't really apply.

You're not wrong in what you said about your fourth option. But again, this discussion started because a poster went out of his way to promote a group of Neo-Nazis as irreverent like South Park. I choose to make my opinion about that known in a loud fashion.

I agree with this. It's handy stupid people come with their own label maker. They should be encouraged.

Let's see ... someone (not me) posted an article a while (quite a while) back about the alt-right and who they are.

I read the article. I critiqued the article, not promoted, critiqued. Did I say folks should read it? Yes*. And yeah, I said they were irreverent, like South Park. You know, South Park, with Adolph Cartman and KKK Cartman.

*Some would rather pretend the alt-right never existed before "Drumpf!" Surprise. They've been around long before the internet. They just went by other names (see: Nazis, KKK). And now they've adopted new techniques. But if you don't pay attention to those changes, you won't be aware of who they are and what they're up to.

Who? I don't know of anyone who has even hinted this is true. It seems to me there is near universal agreement that the type of people currently known as the "alt-right" are always there, under their rocks. Trump's ascendance has encouraged many of them to come out and start publicly spreading their manure. But nobody alive during the last 8 years would make the mistake that these racist, sexist imbeciles are anything new. What's new is they are now gaining positions of greater influence. They used to, at most, be Representatives from the slave states.


They've been around long before the internet. They just went by other names (see: Nazis, KKK). And now they've adopted new techniques. But if you don't pay attention to those changes, you won't be aware of who they are and what they're up to.

No argument about this. One thing studying them will do, for example, is point out how ridiculous a comparison between them and South Park is, if for no other reason than South Park is satire whereas these losers are in deadly earnest.

Tiny amalgamations of people in the right place at the right time can significantly change history. We ignore this cancer at our peril. And that's why I agree with you completely that rather than censoring them they should be invited to use all the rope they can get their hands on. No curse on them is as effective than merely quoting their own words.

I'm deadly aware of what they're up to. Suckering in rubes like you to help normalize their dreadful, hateful behavior and take them off the fringes of society to a point where their "platform" now sits directly next to the president as his top advisor.

But like you said, it was "quite a while back" so maybe we should forget it. Just like Ann Coulter's "How many people have Nazis killed the past 25 years anyway?".
