Dave Hakstol named head coach of Flyers

Re: Dave Hakstol named head coach of Flyers

Do I think the Flyers hiring Dave Hakstol is a stretch? No more of a stretch than hiring a former player with little to no coaching experience like Craig Berube. I hope Coach Hakstol succeeds for a couple of reasons...

1. What happens 90% of the time when a big-time college football coach jumps to the NFL? They suck balls. Hakstol is the first college coach to jump to the NHL since Herb Brooks jumped from SCSU to the North Stars back in 1987. I want Hakstol to show that hockey is different from football...a coach is a coach.

2. I'd really like to shove it up the butt of the CHL by having a former college coach go out and succeed in the NHL.

Re: Dave Hakstol named head coach of Flyers

No brainer for hakstol. Take the money and if it doesn't work out, plenty of college programs would be interested

Given the fan and front office expectations and dysfunctional locker room culture of the Philadelphia Flyers, he better learn how to smile.:) This is a another bad move on Hextall's part. NCAA is world's apart from the NHL and Hak's lack of coaching or playing experience in the NHL is a serious disadvantage. IMO Terry Murray, who is coaching the Phantoms, is a better choice for head coach. Bringing Hak in as an assistant makes more sense, but throwing him into this meat grinder shackled with high expectations as a head coach with the personality of a tree frog looks pretty ominous.

He has nothing to lose. Being an NHL head coach is the top of the profession. There is no hockey coaching job that you get promoted to from an NHL head coach position.

I congratulate him. He was not afraid to take his shot when the NHL came calling, unlike a bunch of other college coaches I suspect.

No comparison...Berube played in the NHL for 17 seasons and has been a coach in the Flyers organization since 2006. Hiring an inexperienced outsider like Hak is a desperation move by Hextall to change the culture in Philadelphia. IMO Hak has two seasons to fix it or he's gone.

Berube had been a Flyers assistant for six years and has spent 3 seasons coaching in the AHL.

There's no other professional sport that head coaches get fired from faster than the NHL, either.

I don't disparage Hakstol from taking a shot. Good for him.

I just think he shouldn't have taken it with a team known for impatience and a hostile fan base when it comes to losing.

He had an in with Philly. No other NHL team was going to hire him. This was his one shot.

What difference does it make? As scooby said, he had an in...if it works, great, if it doesn't there will be colleges lining up to get him on their campus.

Just like most of the big wigs at my company, the resume looks great, and the pay and benefits are good. the job itself probably sucks.

Here is a good question to ask. Do you want Dave Hakstol to succeed? If he does, will College Hockey become the new source of fresh faces for NHL coaches? Do we want that?

I do. More talent of all sorts makes the college game better.

I would hate to think that Fat Alvarez will be the first call he receives if it doesn't work out.

Re: Dave Hakstol named head coach of Flyers

With this defense and these goalies, there won't be many wins in Philly again. There is a reason that they were 6th in the Met Division, barely above .500, with the four playoff teams being far superior to them. Hakstol will have his work cut out for him and unless they can significantly re-vamp the line-up, I don't see them being any better this coming season and could be worse. Their offense can score goals but their defense is brutal.

Re: Dave Hakstol named head coach of Flyers

There really aren't that many opportunities in the NHL and a lot of those guys keep getting recycled around.

Can't imagine this will have any impact on the number of college coaches that get hired.

Exactly. Most of the hate obviously is because he coached the Sioux. Ya either love em or hate em. I really hope he succeeds but if not he will find another coaching job elsewhere.

I want him to succeed. I like it when the NHL notices the NCAA hockey world, after all, it used to be incredibly rare for a college player to go on to the NHL, and now it's common. I don't like the fact that players leave early, but I like the fact that they have enough talent to succeed at the next level.

Re: Dave Hakstol named head coach of Flyers

I want him to succeed. I hope he does. it will make all of NCAA hockey look better. do I think he will, well .....

any truth to the rumor, he so missed the old WCHA, that he chose to go pro instead? Wasn't attendance shrinking a bit these last couple of years?
