D3 Women?

No real surprises in tonight's action.

Hamline crushed Concordia (WI) 7-0. Sophomore forward Sophie Rausch had a hat trick plus an assist. Freshman Emme Nelson had 2 goals. Ava Bailey, a transfer from LIU Brooklyn started in goal over Jaela O'Brien.

Adrian rolled over Aurora 7-1. Callie Wollschlager scored twice and added an assist to lead the team. The Bulldogs have two transfers from RIT on the roster forwards Emily Stemple and Reaghan Pietrowski.

St. Scholastica beat Augsburg in a close contest, 5-3 (CSS scored an empty netter while on the power play). CSS had 5 different scorers, most of the points came from their middle six forwards.

Looking at some rosters, not many transfers abound except for Manhattanville, where interim HC Jennifer MacAskill has brought on 3 former Gusties and a player from Chatham. Some of the NEWHL teams posted rosters despite the season being cancelled. Would have been interesting to see how Potsdam would have done with no rostered goalies...

We'll see if games happen this weekend with HU vs. Augsburg and St. Ben's vs. Bethel
HU and CSB played last week in a NC (3-1 Piper win) and word is there were positive COVID cases on the ice. Could be an incorrect "word" but something happened between those two and now there's questions about a player.

With the postseason now cancelled, is there really any point in finishing the remainder of the season? Isn't it just a drain on the schools at this point?

There is value in team building (certainly with the younger players) to strengthen their desire to come back to the same school next year. Athletics drives enrollment which drives tuition dollars. The tuition fees from athletes tend to be incremental at many D3 schools.

I wholeheartedly agree. In addition, I know in my own daughter's case, she is simply happy to have a chance to play...title or not title. She has worked to play college hockey since a young age, and was so distraught that Covid was risking her not playing for an entire year. So while a full season with a chance of a title is always most enjoyed...she is extremely thankful for 12 games and and an extra year of eligibility.

Castleton just beat Norwich, in Norwich, for the first time ever....that will make the whole ‘season’ worthwhile for all those girls.

Congrats to Castleton. While it is still early, starting to notice that the divide between the top teams and lower teams is not that big this year. Most of the games are very competitive in results. Makes for some exciting hockey...especially for those teams that traditionally been the lower half teams.

Not having to face Amanda Conway at Norwich is a significant change for everyone playing them!

Junior Jessica VanRuden scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 3 minutes left in the second period to help lift visiting Adrian to a 3-2 victory over St. Scholastica to sweep the two-game series and capture the sixth-straight Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup championship trophy in program history.
  • Sophomore Reaghan Pietrowski and freshman Kathryn Truban joined junior Denisa Jandova and junior Jessica VonRuden on the NCHA Slaats Cup All-Tournament Team.
  • Junior goalie Jandova was named the Slaats Cup MVP, made 29 saves to preserve the one-goal victory.

I’m hearing Becker is shutting down their women’s program (maybe other sports too?). Seems they have some overall solvency issues: https://www.becker.edu/about/office-of-the-president/

Seems like they're shutting down alltogether. I'm glad there are some new programs (WNEU, Rivier, Arcadia, Lawrence, Curry) that when added to all the other programs will hopefully make it that every Becker player who wants to find a new place to play hockey while finishing their degree can find a program.

Looking into the Becker situation, there's a professor at NYU (Scott Galloway) who is rating ~500 institutions on whether they will Thrive, Survive, Struggle or be Challenged by the economic impacts of the Pandemic. There are 12 institutions in his study that play NCAA Women's hockey (9 D3, 3 D1/2) that are rated as Challenged. Note that he originally rated "Challenged" as "Perish" but revised the category to "Challenged" after some backlash.

I can't imagine the a NESCAC school in Conn College or an institution of Quinnipiac's stature just folding entirely. I'm curious as to what the western fans think of the western institutions on this list being rated as Challenged (formerly Perish). [TABLE="width: 393"]

William Smith is looking for a new HC for the second straight year. Inaugural head coach Jaime Totten stepped down in June 2020 and appears to be working outside hockey now, and Interim Head Coach Kate Gallagher has now resigned to pursue other opportunities.

Responding to your thread back in March Scott_TG - not sure how I missed it but that analysis of schools is quite enlightening and somewhat prescient - RMU falling into the "challenged" category and they dropped hockey altogether. Major changes are coming to the NCAA. First the whole soon-to-be separation of the "for profit" athletic departments (Power 5 schools) vrs everyone else. Next not just the financial impacts of covid, but also the whole college model has been thrown into question - there will be a lot more "on-line" and the value of being "in-person" at all of the schools not in say the top 25 will be questioned. Anybody at a 'challenged' school is at risk to having their program cut (ala RMU) and even the "struggle" category is not totally safe. Even a "survive" school that does not prioritize hockey might cause a few sleepless nights....

Some updates behind the bench in DIII:

- As expected, the interim tag has been removed from Mark Digby over at SUNY Oswego and he is now officially the Head Coach. Digby pivoted from the Associate HC of the men's program to the women's program in 2019 and was the interim HC last season (which was canceled) when Diane Dillon retired.

- Braeden Ott (Neumann '21) has been hired by her sister Jordan Ott to be her assistant coach at King's.

- Morgan Stacey (Mercyhurst '19) has been hired as an Assistant Coach at St. Norbert following a grad assistant gig at Aurora.

- Nazareth assistant coach Rhea Coad was promoted from Assistant Coach to Head Coach of the NWHL's Buffalo Beauts in March, and in that release she mentioned wanting to focus only on coaching the Beauts. Nazareth has yet to name a replacement.

- Norwich and Wesleyan have lost their assistants to DI positions and will likely name replacements in the coming weeks.

- Colby no longer lists Tess Dupre and Moira Mullaney as assistant coaches.

- Bowdoin no longer lists Derek Whitmore as an assistant.

- Bradley Hefner is no longer listed the assistant at SUNY Morrisville.

- Ally Ross is no longer listed as an assistant at Lebanon Valley, and my understanding is she recently married fellow former goalie and current SUNY Canton HC Dave LaBaff so she may turn up coaching somewhere in northern NY (though Canton appears to be fully staffed at the moment, so maybe not there).

-SUNY Buffalo State has a new AD, Renee Carlineo. Carlineo was previously the AD at Elmira and is coming to Buffalo State after about only one year there. She was also an administrator at RIT prior to Elmira. Her background as a coach and player is in lacrosse. Hopefully Calineo can address the lack of investment in women's hockey at Buffalo State.

I admit I didn't even try to understand the logic of this study but I find it very hard to believe that any of the western schools listed are going anywhere.

Norwich has hired Taylor Willard (University of Vermont '18) as their new assistant coach. She was previously a volunteer assistant at her alma mater. As a player, Willard was a two-year captain for the Catamounts, played for Team USA at the 2013 U18 Women's Worlds (silver medal), and played for the Montreal Canadiennes of the CWHL in the league's final season. Williard's time at UVM saw her cross paths with multiple coaches who have coached at both the DI and DIII level: Jim Plumer, Ashley Salerno, and Grant Kimball.

In other news, the Beantown Classic weekend 2 is coming up which features the college players, so this will be a good opportunity for those who haven't been playing due to the pandemic to get some games in...
