D3 Tournament Changes

There's plenty of housing in Lake Placid. They hold major international events. Whenever the men are there, it always coincides with a huge youth Can-Am tournament. You see teams, parents, and fans all over the place. And I've never had a problem finding a room in all those years.

The issue is costs and convenience.
And perception of one tournament being "lesser" or the "sideshow" to the other...which I truly feel would not be the case. But maybe I'm naive.

russ what do you imagine the costs for say an ahl arena would be? utica is a special case cause we all know who also plays there already but places like syracuse rochester, providence out east and grand rapids, iowa, and cleveland out west all have big airports and plenty of hotels certainly more convienent than lake placid. plus they should already have the infrastructure for tv/live streaming so we dont have to watch half the game through netting like it was at trinity

The problem you're ultimately going to have with any of the AHL arenas (maybe minus Utica, but if Utica isn't in it, it's obviously not good), they'd have to give up a weekend during prime playoff hunt time in the AHL for an event where, let's face it, if you're not going to have a local team in it, you're probably going to lose money

I was talking about the costs for the NCAA to get teams to Lake Placid and house them and the inconvenience thereof. Not to mention the costs to the fans and the schools who want to have a larger travel party than the NCAA covers.

I wasn't talkng about the arena itself. I have no idea how that's worked out with the NCAA. But as AHL arenas go, with rare exceptions, they are all too big.

Elmira is the perfect location to host:
  • Hosted successfully in the past
  • Within easy driving distance to 3 of this year's 4 finalists
  • Regional Airport (only Delta)
  • Plenty of hotels in the county
  • NAHL club is only tenant
  • 4,000 seats
  • In a small triangle of moderate winter weather

all of these things are true. But the school has to be willing to do all the work to do all the game day operations and the planning/man power etc. behind putting on a successful event. Is that something the Elmira Athletic Dept. is willing to take on with spring sports all going full bore at that point etc.
