D3 - ECAC-West News, Notes, and Useless Banter

Re: D3 - ECAC-West News, Notes, and Useless Banter

I've heard Gustavus had interest in heading out East for either the Cardinal-Panther or East-West Classic.

With the ECAC West playing two games each with William Smith next season, does Elmira/Plattsburgh pull out of the East-West Classic?

I'm almost certain both teams have already confirmed for the east/west next season.

Also, I'd think Plattsburgh would drop its 2nd game with Manhattanville and either Williams or Castleton before dropping the east/west.

I agree. Women's hockey is adding plenty of new teams lately as well..

William Smith, Johnson & Wales, UNE, Daniel Webster, Salem State, Franklin Pierce...

All great for women's hockey and it's continued growth!

We may have enough teams soon for a 9-team NCAA Tournament.

Agreed. With the consideration of travel and that Castleton seems to be a program on the rise, I'd guess the Williams game would be dropped...

Can't argue with the travel, but Williams is playing in the NCAA this weekend (against Platty ironically) and Castleton is sitting home. I would suggest that Williams might be rising a little faster....and Castleton's win over Williams early in the season was affected greatly by the fact that Williams played their 3rd goalie who hadn't even dressed prior to that weekend due to injuries to their top 2 goalies.

Williams beat the #6, #8, and #4 teams to win the NESCAC tournament. They didn't play either of the top two teams. Castleton lost in their conference final to the #2 or #3 team in the tourney. Comparing their seasons based on the post season is only telling half the story. Neither team could have gotten an at-large bid, Williams got hotter and luckier and had an easier path through the Conference tournament. I stand by my comments about Castleton/Williams.

Stand away - time will tell. I don't think that adding a couple of ECAC West patsy games to Plattsburgh and Elmira's schedules (William Smith) is going to help them much regardless come tournament selection time in the future. They already play 10 of those a year so it is going to start becoming a problem for them come tournament selection time.

What rink will Daniel Webster skate out of?

Which is why Plattsburgh (Elmira's non-conference schedule is similar) plays Middlebury twice, Norwich twice, Manhattanville twice (most years).... they know what their conference presents. I'm not sure whether the William Smith games are going to count the first couple of years. Are they full members right off the bad or is there a probation period for them?

According to the championship manual provisional teams only count in the primary criteria in their 3rd and 4th year of probation

Interesting..... wasn't aware of that .... I am also surprised that the probation period is 4 YEARS - that is a pretty long time.

Have to think about this - does dropping 2 competitive games for (effectively) 2 non-games hurt, help, or not matter to Elmira/Plattsburgh (and Utica/Oswego I guess)?

On a marginally related note, has anyone heard of any players going to William Smith next season....I see they have a club team and recognize one NE player on it. Are they planning on filling the varsity team next season largely from the club team? If not, I would have expected to be hearing at least a little about players going there next season (like with Franklin Pierce for instance)....

The question I have, though, is whether William Smith is considered probational since they are already a Div III member (just not in hockey).

So does that mean St. Norbert is done with there probation? Or are they still on "Secret Probation"?

The four-year probation period only applies to schools moving up to Division III. If they add a sport and already are a D3 member they can play in the playoffs immediately.

St Norbert was never on probation...if they were they couldn't have made the NCAA's last year. Like Prez just said, since SNC was already a D3 institution they don't have the probationary period.
