Re: D1 Forum Poll: Who wins the NCAA crown: Round 2 - Public

Saying Cornell is the 500 team with the best chance to go on a run is not the same as saying Cornell is one of the teams with a good shot at the final four.
In the context of the question, it kind of was the same. Dave was remembering Brown turning their season around and making the Frozen Four in 2002 and that was the catalyst for the discussion last year.

Re: D1 Forum Poll: Who wins the NCAA crown: Round 2 - Public

This isn't the thread where we were having the discussion ARM and I mentioned, but it was interesting to look back on what we said on Jan. 14, 2010.

http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?87753-D1-Final-eight/page4

This is what you wrote on Jan. 14 last year, OnMAA:
Most on here will agree that at this point that crown looks to be a fierce threeway battle between Clarkson, Cornell and Harvard, with Quinnipiac a serious dark horse threath. Hopefully all teams can stay healthy down the stretch, so may the best team win.
This is what I wrote, which was also accurate:
It may be true that Cornell matches up better with ECAC teams than Harvard does, and Cornell should be favored in that respect. Cornell also has a decent shot at the No. 1 seed in the tourney and an easier path to the final. I agree with ARM that the ECAC is probably the conference with the best shot at having a non-top 8 team make the tourney on the basis of the autobid. There's a decent chance the ECAC gets 3 in, with Harvard and Clarkson getting at-large plus some dark horse autobid.
By "dark horse autobid," I meant a team that had to win the ECAC tourney to get make NCAAs, which was indeed the case for Cornell, which was not in the PWR top 8 until it made NCAAs.

Meanwhile, RStarr and LakersFan were clearly down on Cornell's chances on Jan. 14 due to inexperience for the former and the early January losses for the latter, which I had forgotten.

Re: D1 Forum Poll: Who wins the NCAA crown: Round 2 - Public

And here's the thread I was referring to:
http://board.uscho.com/showthread.p...ence-Will-Claim-the-NCAA-Champion-in-6-Months
Ha, so I missed badly on Providence being a dark horse and completely missed BU -- I was too busy railing on voters all season for keeping BU in the top 10 :P

Anyway, as for near-500 Dec-Jan team to win this year, you'd have to go with North Dakota this season who has 8-7-2 in December. I'll also throw Harvard in a mix, who was recently 6-7-2. It's kind of cheating since neither team is presently near .500 and both teams have gone on mult-weekend unbeaten streaks since, though schedules have been a bit softer and gone to more or less to form last couple weekends.

You are correct that I was in Cornell's corner all year long last year, but until late in the season there were a lot of other ECAC'ers that disagreed with me. RStarr was/is a Clarky supporter. Lakersfan's vision was obscured by the convincing Mercy wins over Cornell early on. :D.

At any rate we are mostly on the same wavelength when making the prediction calls. You have the benefit of a much longer and deeper view of the rules, the history and the comings and going.

My "dark horses" for the year are "Quinny" from the ECAC and "PC" from HE. Both have excellent tending and some fire power. The question on both teams is if they have enough horses to last in a stretch run. In reality both will most likely have to win their conference to get in. I can't see a WCHA dark horse running away with it. Too many obstacles, just to get out of the league.

Right, I see where you're coming from now.

One factor favoring North Dakota is if they make the tournament, they're likely looking at a road game with BU or Cornell. (some chance of Mercyhurst, but if Mercyhurst gets home ice it's probably Minnesota they're just edging out for the berth). I don't think it'd be too shocking to see BU or Cornell get beaten by a WCHA team in the NCAA quarterfinals (and of course UND's already beaten BU once this season, albeit a long time ago)

Re: D1 Forum Poll: Who wins the NCAA crown: Round 2 - Public

I don't think anyone in the ECAC has much of a chance of beating Cornell but my pick for a dark horse would be Princeton after the recent 7 game winning streak.

Re: D1 Forum Poll: Who wins the NCAA crown: Round 2 - Public

Wisconsin. They are the best team in the country and will win it all. Granted, I am a Wisconsin homer and am very biased, but youd be crazy to bet against the Badgers this year.

Ok, I have to really question the Quinnipiac pick. Even before this Clarkson loss -- they've been losing games like this all season. I'll post more in the polls thread.

I agree their goaltending was good --- last season. This team's defense hasn't measured up to last year at all. People tell me they're young. Sure, ok. But there's no denying that so far, they've regressed overall, despite adding one of the nation's top scorers.

And BU followed up the close loss in just their second game by trouncing UND the very next day. The two best players on BU had only had a few practices with the team at that point. One of those players just set the single season point and goal scoring records for the Terriers as a frosh. No one coming into BU for a road game in the tournament should be considering it a favor.

And the two best players for UND had only had a few practices with the team at that point. BU is obviously a good team. But I don't think you can automatically assume that they've improved more than UND, because UND has played a tougher schedule. I doubt that those two will be matched in a quarter in any case.

And I'm sure UND hadn't improved either...

But I'd agree the October results don't mean much
Look, all these teams are very good.

WCHA teams are 3-2 all time in NCAA road quarterfinals, with a 3 game win streak. BU and UND would be a really compelling quarterfinal.

UND scares me. But with the tournament only consisting of 8 teams, I'm it'll be a tough opponent no matter who it ends up being.

Ha, beat me to it.

I don't think it's too unlikely for UND to get up 6 in the PWR, given that they're winning now and BC and UMD have been slipping.

Geography might be the bigger issue, but I hope we don't end up with half the NCAA bracket being a WCHA tourney retread.

Exactly. BU would be the big favorite over UND, and rightly so, but it wouldn't be a "no chance" game like some might think based on reputation.

The Sioux finish with a tough schedule after they wrap up with MSU: @OSU, @UW, and hosting UM. By comparison, UMD has one more with the Tomcikova-less Bemidji, then @MSU, @OSU, and SCSU. The key for NoDak will probably be their final series against Minnesota, because it's unlikely UMD does much losing.
