D1 Final eight

Re: D1 Final eight

I was there too . . . and as I recall the winning TEAM, the team that was "best" at scoring goals, the team that was "best" defensively, with the "best" goaltending, won the game. The team that played the "best" in those 60 minutes, on that day, won the game.

We'll see who's "best" this year when the game's over and one team moves on . . . and one team packs it up.

UMD wasn't the best defensively or overall in that game. giving up 45 shots compared to 12 isn't a W in defense, sorry. Goaltending however, stole the game for UMD and sometimes that's all you need.

Re: D1 Final eight

Here are the predictions based on the poll

Mercyhurst 80%
UMD 75%
Minnesota 74%
Harvard 59%

(there will be some rounding error issues adding 8 numbers for each team, but oh well)

Re: D1 Final eight

And looking at the history of this poll:

2009 -- was this not taken or not archived in the QOTW thread? I can remember

2008 - 33% (the leading vote getter) picked the Frozen Four, and correctly predicted Wisconsin would get the road win over Minnesota.

2007 - Of course this is the year 5-6-7 triumphed. Only 1% picked the actual Frozen Four.

2006 - 33% (the leading vote getter) picked the actual Frozen Four, which hasn't too hard since all host teams won.

2005 -- 5% picked the actual Frozen Four, which involved SLU posting a road at No. 2 UMD, and a majority favored a Wisconsin road win over Dartmouth that didn't happen.

Re: D1 Final eight

Cornell is in. Congrats to the Big Red and their fans.

Now on to the "upset at the DECC!"

Re: D1 Final eight

Olympic year Frozen Four fields tend to be a little different than the norm, but I find the composition of the 2010 FF odd in that on paper all four teams figure to be improved next season.

Cornell loses Jue, Zorn, Danforth, and McGinty, but none have 20 points this year, and only Zorn's 55 points exceeds 40 in a career. They return Johnston (77 pts in 2 years) and a freshman class including Jenner and Can U18 Cudmore.

Mercyhurst has but one senior, a low-scoring D. They get back Agosta and add 2 recruits, with Bestland having Can. U18 experience.

Minnesota-Duluth takes a pretty big graduation hit, losing Blais and Touminen, who have 141 and 136 points respectively in their careers, and 3D, including a WCHA 1st-teamer in Rasmussen. They return Irwin and Homlov, both in triple digits for career points, Winberg, Martin, and Asserholt, plus a 5-player recruit class, 4 of whom have played for their country's U-18 teams.

Minnesota graduates 6, 2D and 4F, highlighted by Francis, Jones, and Blankenship, with 129, 79, and 61 career points respectively. They return Schoullis from a medical redshirt with 60 points in her two seasons, and add a deep class, 5 of whom have been on U18s for Canada and the 6th was just named Minnesota's Ms. Hockey.

Given the returns/additions at programs such as Wisconsin, BC, BU, Clarkson, Harvard, UNH, etc., it doesn't mean we'll see the same teams back, but it does promise to be a loaded field in Erie.

Cornell is also bringing in another Canadian U18 player that has yet to be added to the recruiting lists. :)

I saw your "TBA", but because I was just using last names, I hated to add just an "A".
