D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Yes, these recuits may dominate, own etc. etc. etc. during their high school, U19 or even summer AAA hockey. Most goals I saw this year were players going end to end without a pass and many breakaways. The girl mentioned above played D but didn't play like a D as did most D. Alot of end to end. Scores were higher especially in Minnesota and I thought play was slower than in years past. Teams had 1 maybe maybe 2 lines. In ND, Wisc teams had maybe 3 solid players. U19 teams were solid but even SSM seemed down as far as talent.

I used to think AAA summer hockey was a very close to college hockey. Let me say College is another HUGE level. In college you MUST play team hockey and not play as an individual. In college rarley can you go end to end without passing the puck.

Now that’s what I call a well thought out unbiased response, and could not agree more. The overall talent level had slipped after years of incredible gain.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

I'm not sure it was well thought out and I'm sure some people won't like to hear it. In my opinion it's true.

I would like to hear others opinions and maybe it needs to be put into another thread?

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Rugrat: I've not reponded to many threads........you're yawmsss are quite boing..........are you the man that has is all?

Yawn....Nope, I'm not "the man"... why do you assume I'm a man? I come to the D1 Commitments 2011-12 thread to find out about commitments for next season.... Not to read a ****ing contest between a couple of ESPN wanna be analysts. So start a new thread!

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

You should really get more sleep; this is at least the 3rd time in the last couple of weeks that you've been yawning through your attempts at playing thread police defending the world from off-season digressions.

Yawn.... just want to read commitments and not have to sift through crap. If that's attempting to play thread police.... oh well. ARM, I see you're a long time poster (15,445 posts). Wow! I'm honored that you acknowledged my post! I'm not worthy.

Interesting question. Just my opinion from 5 years of observing, I thought, at least in Minnesota HS Hockey, the overall talent was up. The SEC was down this year from the past few years and overall there aren't as many upper level superstars as years past but I thought the overall talent has gotten better from the bottom up. I think you are seeing teams with 2+ good lines now, when many programs in the past were lucky to have 1 full line of good players. This is not to say that there are more D-1 level players. I think D-1 prospect numbers are down for the 2012 and 2013 classes but there are a lot of good young players out there that could develop into great prospects.

As far as D play, I think there will be a rude awakening for some of the D that are used to rushing the puck, not moving the puck and generally playing too offensively. Unfortunately, this style of play is rewarded because the advanced programs consistently pick what I think are Fs playing the D position. I'm seeing too many D rushing the puck, not passing and playing down around the hash marks in the offensive zone. If they play like that in college I think they will quickly find themselves riding the pines.

There most likely isn't going to be new commitment news on a daily basis. If you notice new posts in the commitment thread it's safe to assume it's not always going to be news of another commitment and accordingly you might expect to encounter something other than commitment info on a pretty limited basis. Pretty easy to ignore it if that's what one prefers.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Ruggy - Sorry this is off topic.

Here's my take.

Last 4-5 years Minnesota hockey was very strong. Take the last 3 years Roseville, Stillwater, WBL, EP, Edina, Centennial, Warroad, Rosseau, Hill Murray, Irondale, Blaine, Hastings, ER, CR, Eagan, HOPKINS etc.etc. (I think I'm forgetting a few) All had 2 STRONG lines and some with 3.

This past year I saw Tonka, Edina having two lines. EP, LS, C Rapids, ER, Roseville, Stillwater, HM, WBL and a few others having maybe 1 line and many teams with 2 or 3 very good players. Goalies were down other than top 6 or 7 (looked smaller). I also thought teams looked smaller.

*note I'm talking strong TOP LINES.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Last fall I was talking with a D-1 assistant coach about my observations on the quality of the current high school/U19 female players. I felt that there had been a deterioration of the of the overall quality from a high point I had seen with the 88/89s. She agreed with me and told me that the coaches she knew had been commenting on this. She said that they do see an uptick coming. Interestingly she also commented that the feeling is that the boys side is also not as deep. When I was involved in association hockey we would see cycles in the depth of teams as well. It is interesting to note that many of the current players never played with boys as their predecessors had in their early hockey careers......

That's one opinion. Maybe its true and maybe its not true. I was a board member of a very large association. I can't tell you how many times I heard that a younger group is the best and the current class isn't as good as previous classes. From what I've observed its annual ritual in the hockey world and sports overall. The fact of the matter is that this years (2011) class of Minnesota girls have more girls playing D-1 hockey than ever before. No there aren't any Wendell's or Darwitz's but I think that the overall quality is better than the Wendell or Darwitz era. I think its tougher for individual players to dominate like they could in the past because the level of play overall is better. I think its a natural progression that the skill of the younger players is better and better and the quality will continue to get better, like any sport. I think if you looked at film of players that just played 5-10 years ago you would be amazed at how far women's hockey has progressed. Its the same on the men's side. Watch an old NHL All-Star game from the 80s and you will see that the speed of the game is much faster today. Yes individual programs have up and down years but on the whole the quality of the sport is on the upswing.

Does anyone know if Shelby Bramm going to Mercyhurst is current Laker Bailey Bram's little sister? On the thread it says Shelby Bramm with 2 m's. Is it a coincidence or a spelling mistake, does anyone know?
