D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

There are so many factors that make an apples-to-apples comparison of recruit classes impossible, such as how does one compare a class of two blue chip players to one that has a half-dozen solid to very good players? Another problematic case is one like Minnesota where they have 3 forwards coming in, but they return 7 forwards who have played predominantly on the top two lines for their college careers. Clearly, not all of these incoming players are going to get the ice time that many other rookies around the country will get. If they have less impact as freshmen, does that mean they then belong below a less talented class that has more impact due to greater opportunity? Because there are no hard and fast rules for evaluating "best", it is difficult to say the opinion of someone ranking the classes is "wrong".

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

like puckskillz said...for the real elite kids, absolutely. for some of the others, not so much.

so much of the recruiting in women's hockey is tournament based, and when you can only have 7 off campus contacts and evaluations combined on a given player, it actually can put a big wrench in your ability to see teams in some of the further locales that don't travel to as many tournaments when you've already hit the limit on some of the teams that play in every tournament. of course that's also assuming everyone sticks to the rules.

obviously this is even more exacerbated for the programs that have budgetary constraints and/or are more regional in their recruiting.

The limit of 7 is on an individual player basis. You can watch a team with many recruits many more times than seven times.

Scouts have the book on most tier 1 and tier 2 players. Everyone goes after the same top 25 kids, knowing full well they may land only one of them.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

For a self serving reason? What is it? I can't wait to hear this. I have no ties to Cornell, or any player or school on this list.

Saulnier and Fulton are, according to many people, two of the top recruits in this class, and Saulnier is arguably the best recruit in this class. Everything is open to debate, but the fact that Cornell has a smaller class than some of the other top classes doesn't necessarily make it weaker.

I'm guessing the only self serving reasons involved here are the ones you have for your loved one's class/school not being ranked higher.

BTW, since you're so quick to criticize, and clearly know better than what I clearly stated was nothing more than my uninformed armchair coach opinion/guess, let's have your list.

Good comeback. IMHO your list was pretty good. We can argue until we are blue in the face on the exact order, but at the end of the day your overall catergorization was a good one. Long time posters will remember similar discussion in years past about "The best recruit class". It is after all a personal opinion, but gives fans and followers a taste of what and who to look for next year. Thanks for starting things off. It's all good.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

Obviously the voting is dictated by who you are affiliated with...ie your kid, your kid's teammate, your friends kid etc...!

Not every poster thinks or posts that way. I had UMD has my top pick. Core posters know that my affiliation is with the ECAC and the Ivy Schools, and only listed one of them in my top 5.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

The limit of 7 is on an individual player basis. You can watch a team with many recruits many more times than seven times.

Scouts have the book on most tier 1 and tier 2 players. Everyone goes after the same top 25 kids, knowing full well they may land only one of them.

I'm not sure I follow you. 7 contacts/evals is on an individual basis, but if I watch a team play, I am evaluating every player on that team whether I am really watching them or not. (All games at the same tournament do count as only one eval). I can't watch, say, Player X at 7 different tournaments and then her teammate Player Y at 7 other unique tournaments. Basically if there is any player on a team that I'm going to do the max 3 contacts with then I can only see that team play at 4 different events over the course of the season. I can't say I'm only evaluating one player on a team this week and a different player on that same team next week.

I do agree with you that the coaches know who the Top tier kids are and likely most of the second tier kids as well....but there aren't really that many kids in those tiers...particularly the top tier. You go to a US/Canada U18 event and for the most part, with a few exceptions, there is your top tier. Your top schools don't even really need to know much beyond that top tier or very best of the 2nd tier and your lower level programs need to know pretty deep into the 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th tier of kids. It's a lot of kids.

I think you have to look particularly at the Western Canadian teams...I'm willing to bet that a lot of the eastern schools don't know most of the 2nd or 3rd tier kids playing in Alberta or especially in Manitoba or Saskatchewan beyond who they see on "Team Alberta" or "Team Saskatchewan" or "Team Manitoba". The local teams in these provinces, outside of a few teams like POE, Balmoral, Edge, or Notre Dame, don't typically travel outside of their province to play in big tournaments very often. Many of these eastern schools just don't have the budget to go spend a week in Manitoba and check out teams in that league.

So I agree that pretty much everyone is going to know the top tier of kids no matter where they are from...and when you're talking kids from the US or Ontario, with the exception of possibly Minnesota where most of the kids are playing high school and thus competing only in state (and some eastern schools don't spend much money trying to battle the big schools there), there really isn't an excuse not to know pretty much every kid.

But when it comes to Euros or kids from very insulated areas, I think the knowledge of those 2nd, and especially 3rd tier kids really falls off for many coaches simply because some schools don't have the resources to reach those kids.

Re: D1 Commitments 2011-2012

WI Rinkrat...sorry for my callous comments that appeared to specifically call you out. My point was that unless anyone saw most of the recruits play, it is near impossible to form the list of best recruit classes. We have all seen that even U18 National players disappear from the stage quickly...best way to judge the class is after a season or two at the next level. I know it's not as much fun, but way more accurate. BTW...I do agree with the two top picks at Cornell, but I believe that some other schools have a much deeper and talented overall class. Please accept my apologies...
