D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

In the article she does say she's a fan of the city of Boston- it also seems like she committed to BU and then they didn't have a full scholarship for her, but they let her know after everyone had just about finalized their roster. It does mention the Big Red as a possible option going forward as well.

So BU only, come on, there are what, 34. Please, get with the program, all of you.

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

With BU out, and other schools Coyne was interested in already having filled their rosters, the move was to Plan B: A year of college prep school, as Harvard had suggested.

This should be a lesson to all female hockey players -- academics count. It doesn't matter how good you are, if your academics aren't good enough, you will either have to compromise or pursue Plan B.

To set the record straight, my post was not a criticism of any player or their choices. It was my interpretation of the situation at the time. Following your dream isn't always the easiest choice and takes courage. Further, what we all should appreciate is that this top player shared her story so the players that come behind her can learn from it. To me, this is leadership -- which is as important off-ice as on-ice.

post Grad at Berkshire, Harvard Coach is smart. Then She is not
on any other Ivy, or Hockey East roster. Plus, comes in next year
with a younger group of recruits.

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

It's not unusual for Harvard to 'suggest' a post grad year. Lots of kids do it to boost their grades or increase their chances for playing at a major program. Ms. Coyne may feel that she is 'hockey' ready but at Harvard, you have to be 'student' ready or else you don't get in. You can skate by (no pun intended) academically at BU; try that at Harvard and you'll be asked to leave for someone who will apply themselves in the classroom.

Also, Angie Francisco '01 who played on the women's national championship team is a member of the Admissions Committee and while I have zero inside knowledge of this, it wouldn't be a stretch to think she had some input for Ms. Coyne and her family.

In Canada, if you take the extra year, only one mark can be improved and considered later. All the other first attempts in grade 12 count towards your final transcript. What up with that?

For US schools, I believe you are confusing Clearinghouse rules with Admissions. For admissions, as long as you graduate with your core courses and get through Clearinghouse, you can upgrade and/or take as many additional courses as you like to later improve your marks for Admissions.

If you are looking at the Canadian schools instead, they only count your best 6 Grade 12 credits (including required prerequisites for your intended program)....if you want to take 10 or more credits to get the 6 best ones you can, it's all good.

I knew I was taking a risk when I posted. Ran into a guy last night that fed me this info about his own kid's situation for next year. Thought it sounded a little unfair. This really has no connection with what I was talking about earlier though. Thanks. :)

This may be a tougher sell than you think, word from a couple of coaches in the know is that test scores will be the bigger challenge. Berkshire may be able to help with a few grades, but not with the ACT or SAT. Wishing her the best of luck though.

Maggie Walsh defense from UVM transferring to UCONN ...red shirting her sophomore year

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

Thats probably why she's redshirting. Hockey East doesn't have the sit out rule so if she doesn't have the release, she has to sit.

I've been told that Hockey East is adopting the transfer and sit rule.

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

So does her transfer leave UVM with 1 less player on their roster or where they aware of the transfer during their recruiting season?

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

I've been told that Hockey East is adopting the transfer and sit rule.

Is it in effect already for upcoming season then ?.
(And I do agree with the sit rule. CIS already has it uniformly accross the board)

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

To my knowledge, Walsh let UVM know about her decision to transfer after the season ended so yes, it leaves Vermont with one less player for next season. Also UCONNFAN, you are correct, she was not given her release to play for UCONN-a decision not made by Hockey East or the NCAA.
