D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

BU's announcement of eight freshmen and two transfers. Quite a strong and deep group. Kudos to Durocher and his staff.

Hmm. This class announcement should rekindle a past thread about "Who has the best incoming class".

I'd say the one from BU is pretty hard to beat, even when considering adding olympic returnees at various other schools as part of the incoming class.

The one two three punch of Ward, Wakefield and Poulin is pretty hard to beat.

That may be true, although I am very interested in seeing how these players incorporate into the team. BU already had 5 returning strong defensemen. Adding 4 more is bound to be problematic especially at this position where many teams only play 4 or 5 regularly.

We talked about similar issues last season in the Rutter thread, around about here:
Agree that Knight is a high impact player for Wisco, just like Agosta is for Mercyhurst. Not too many others in the college game that are as dynamic. The next one with that kind of impact will probably be Poulin.

IMHO next season I could see another Wisco - Hurst final.
Again, I don't think it is as clear cut that the BU trio stands above any three returning/incoming players at any other school, just like I didn't think it is a given that Agosta will be the single player having the most impact next season. It is within the realm of possibility that another school in the city of Boston or another team wearing red and white could get more impact from 3 additions than the Terriers.

For discussion, here are some other possible contending teams and a guess at candidates for "3 most impactful additions":

BC -- Schaus, Stack, Mangene (or one of their other U18 vets);
Clarkson -- Rattray, Howe, Nisbet;
Cornell -- Johnston, Jenner, J. Campbell;
Harvard -- Fry, Gedman, Young;
MC -- Agosta, Bestland, Cicero;
UM -- Davis, Kessel, Schoullis;
UMD -- Holmlov, Irwin, Martin;
UND -- Karvinen, Lam, Lam;
UNH -- don't know enough about them for even a wild guess;:o
UW -- Duggan, Knight, Rigsby;

So I agree that BU is bringing in a lot of clout, but they have company. It should make for a very competitive season.:)

Have believed this for forty years and still do - they all look good on paper. It's fun to speculate, though, and I really enjoy threads such as this one.

ARM, Thanks for that list. A great list of teams with a strong one two three punch of players adding to the team since last season. Agree that this will make for an exciting season to watch. IMHO it is wide open for the fight to the Final Four.

Please note that Irwin at UMD should not count, as she did play part of the season last year.

So with that in mind, I see the following as the top end 1-2-3 incoming punch:

BU - Ward, Poulin, Wakefield
Cornell - Jenner, Johnston, Campbell
Wisco - Duggan, Knight, Rigsby

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

You're thinking of Jocelyne Larocque, the player that returned to play only one semester of her junior season. In hindsight, a great move, as her addition made them a much better team than they'd been in the first half.

So with that in mind, I see the following as the top end 1-2-3 incoming punch:

BU - Ward, Poulin, Wakefield
Cornell - Jenner, Johnston, Campbell
Wisco - Duggan, Knight, Rigsby
I'd put UMD at #1, because all three of their "new" players have an understanding of what it takes to win a ring in D-I. The BU group may have more talent, but they will all be adjusting to a new team. If we expand the list to four, I'd say UMD again, because Winberg would have an edge over the 4th player in any of the other groups.

Ummh Yeah my bad, :o :o :o :o .....I'm in summer not thinking clearly mode.....So you are right, with Irwin as part of the UMD 1-2-3, UMD is clearly in this top echelon of teams with the more premium 1-2-3 incomer set.

And for what it is worth, saw Irwin play live against the US earlier in the exhibition series, and then again later on on the tube in the Final, and IMHO she clearly stepped up her game a notch or two in the final. That can only bode well for her and UMD in the upcoming season. IMHO Irwin, Knight and Agosta will all be strong candidates for the Patty Katz going into the season.

These may be good 1,2,3 discussions, but how about the incoming/returning 4,5,6 factors as well. Wisco has a huge factor in MJ, plus new freshman players Packer a 2-time U-18 Gold medalist and Asst Captain and the younger Ammermann a U-18 Gold and Silver medalist and Captain. Both players would be on most other schools top 3. MJ in my opinion is the biggest incoming factor of the whole lot. He and Wisco have a lot to prove after last year's poor performance.

I agree with that. Northeastern also gets their coach back after an Olympic absence. Plus there are a number of staffs that have been shuffled to some degree. Big factors to be sure, although most would agree that they don't really fall within the domain of "best incoming classes". And I think one could make a good case that Knight/Duggan/Rigsby may in actually have the biggest impact of any three players. Duggan brings a lot to that Badger squad that isn't necessarily evident in any stat.

I was thinking the same thing while reading the posts. I think for several teams those returning 4, 5 & 6 (and beyond) players are going to turn out to be big factors...and I think UW could be the prime example of those teams.

Agree on all points, "Best incoming class" generally refers to the freshman class and doesn't include players returning from LOAs or transfers either. So it seems the discussion was more about program improvements year to year. Given that the return of MJ is a big factor as is the depth of the WISCO additions. I put them and BU at the top of the heap based on improvements overall year to year.

Re: D1 Commitments 2010-2011, part deux

Interesting did OSU lose goalies to injury or players not returning - odd to have two late adds?

Is Loren Carrier from AZ?

Couple of comments:
2010-2011 class was 209.
By Country - 115 USA, 90 Canada, 4 International
Top suppliers by Province/State.
Ontario - 57
Minnesota - 39
Massachusetts - 13
No one else over - 8.

There were some numbers posted a few years ago about typical attrition. About 30-35 percent of players from an annual D1 recruit class do not play hockey for their recruit school by year 4. Some quit hockey, some transfer and some simply get cut.

One of our D is in this same class, and at her school ALL 7 recruits from that class are still rostered AND playing going into year 4, something that is an exception, rather than the norm for that school.
