D-III Rosters Starting to Pop Up

Re: D-III Rosters Starting to Pop Up

When do all of these teams start skating officially? The Nescac teams can't step on the ice in an official manner until Nov. 1. Does the put the Nescac teams behind for the first quarter of the season? What's your opinion?

You are allowed to start official practices on Oct. 15th. I know that probably most if not all the ECAC West programs were on the ice that day. Norwich was on the ice Oct. 15th as well.

Re: D-III Rosters Starting to Pop Up

If a field hockey team qualifies for NESCACS and beyond then their fall season does overlap with the November 1 start date for NESCAC hockey. I don't think this is why NESCAC starts late. I believe NESCAC follows the same formula that IVY schools follow, start three weeks later. I don't think there are too many students playing more than one sport at big Ivies. I believe the reason is to make a statement about the relative importance of academics versus athletics.

The NESCAC website provides a sort of mission statement describing Conference philosophy:

NESCAC teams have won 5 of the 9 women's DIII championships, so they must not be too far behind.
