D-III All-Americans Watch

Out west you would have to strongly consider Chris Berenguer of Hamline University. Already a two-time AA and maybe three-time. Not to mention a great role-model, student, husband and dad.

He's the whole package!

And the POTY goes to the three-time All-American...................Chris "Smokes" Berenguer!!!

Re: D-III All-Americans Watch

You need to type faster, and Satin is the AD at Plattsburgh, not a hockey player ;)

Kind of hard to type faster when you are revealing the list live and the AA list press release goes up before the actual announcement is made...

i was using Opera, which has auto reload, so I was refreshing every minute, and all i had to do was copy n paste.
Surprising to see 3 teams.

Congrats Prez, you got 11 of your 12!

Was it ever known ahead of time that the East was getting 3 teams this year? And the timing and logic behind it baffles me. It says "This is the first year that coaches have added an East Third Team due to the number of schools and players competing in the East Region." But last I checked, the East Region became smaller this year (loss of LVC) while the West Region remained the same. Or is this just their delayed reaction to having an extra set of players to choose from with the MASCAC having all-conference teams too?

Re: D-III All-Americans Watch

It comes closer to the ratio of teams E:W. The other option would be to have only one West team, which wouldn't sit well...

And it looks like the MASCAC will need the AQ to get an AA.

Thought - will the AHCA have to go to legal sized paper to add the 3rd team East on the AA certificate?

I was baffled as well but that is a good point about the MASCAC. Although the number of teams didn't change recently in the East, there are more players eligible for All-American with the MASCAC All Conference teams. That very well may be the reason.

The Wallace pick baffles me as well. Sure the guy was the ECAC West Player of the Year but 28 points overall? Little bit weak sauce considering Elmira had two guys with more points and Manhattanville's Mickey Lang is probably the conference's best player.

It was a surprise seeing him on there, but I figure both Willer and Vallaincourt split votes and Lang probably got screwed over by his team's collapse in the second half.

Excellent pick. Surprising, too, considering the league he was in. Was a major factor in turning around a program that had been going nowhere for a long time to a pair of regular season and one postseason MIAC title. Pipers had some help in getting to the top (goaltender very good this year as well) but Berenguer was often the difference for them.

Good for him and good for Hamline.

Why is it so surprising? MIAC players have now won three of the past six Sid Watson Awards (Martinson '10, Hanna '06). Seems like the league is really getting the shank.

Because the league had such a balanced race this year that nobody stood out head and tails during the season. This made for a good, entertaining race but it also means you're not likely to get many votes to be among the top teams in the country. Hamline, a school that has not been a power in the past, needed a win on the final day of the season to finish first and get into the postseason. The NCAA thought so little of that title they sent them off to a play-in game on the road. They managed to win that one but then got dumped in the next round. In other words, they didn't get a lot of national buzz all year. So, yes, I would say this was a surprising pick. Don't misunderstand. All power to the guy. This just didn't seem like a year a MIAC guy would get it.

They didn't get sent off to play a play-in game on the road. If they had a facility that didn't melt its ice before the NCAAs started they would have had a first round game at home - just like Norwich did. The majority of teams in the field play in the first round. Don't go looking for non-existent snubs.

Nonsense. They weren't going to be home under any circumstances. And you can make a good case they shouldn't have been. It was, after all, a very balanced league race. And while those are fun, the bad news is it means the champ's overall numbers shrink in the process. So be it.

But I contend a team that wins the regular and post-season title deserves some kind of break. A fairer call would have been to send them straight to St. Norbert's for the quarterfinal game.

But that is all off the point.

The point was (and still is) this was an unexpected, delightful bonus for a team that is barely known outside of its own circle. As it turned out, they end up with two first team All-Americans. If I was a suspicious sort, I might be inclined to think this was what an old hockey broadcaster I know used to call an "even-upper." But I don't think the NCAA types are that smart. So I will simply presume that somebody at Hamline did a helluva good sales job. Whoever it was, bravo to them.
