Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

What exactly were you guys expecting from a crowd two and a half times bigger than the average Wisconsin crowd? They held this game at the football stadium because it was a spectacle designed to bring in new fans, not because there are 30,000 diehard, knowledgeable fans getting shut out of the KC every night.

I was expecting what has been reported: poor sight lines and poor ice. It's why I didn't go (on top of the fact that I got my fill of standing outside for hours in the cold in my winter camping days). Fans more interested in the spectacle rather than the game is just icing on the cake, I guess.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

They recently moved the rink from the dead center of the field (hoping for 60,000) to one end of the field (closing admission down to 30,000). If I remember correctly.

I like the last line of the article. Are people who had center ice seats still going to get them? Are those in the end zone going to get booted now that they are center ice? Assuming they sold enough to start filling the end zone (which it doesn't sound like)

College Hockey: NCAA Shrinks Capacity for Ford Field Frozen Four
by Todd D. Milewski/Senior Writer
Oct. 8, 2009 — Capacity at the 2010 Frozen Four at Detroit’s Ford Field is shrinking to just over 36,000 from over 70,000, the NCAA announced Thursday.

The rink originally was to be placed in the middle of what normally is the football field in the stadium, but that location has been moved to the West end zone.

Risers with seating will be put in on both sides of the rink.

The top image shows the original layout for the 2010 Frozen Four at Ford Field. The bottom image shows the reconfigured layout with the rink at one end of the stadium.Joni Comstock, the NCAA senior vice president of championships, said sight lines for fans and the economy, particularly in having so many tickets available, factored into the decison.

Less-than-desired ticket sales likely factored into the equation.

“We are truly excited about the potential for a record-setting Men’s Frozen Four at Ford Field,” Comstock said in a news release. “The NCAA, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, Detroit Sports and Ford Field have been working together to ensure the 2010 Men’s Frozen Four will be one of the best ever.”

No one of those factors was more important than another in the decision to alter the layout, said Cameron Schuh, the NCAA’s associate director of public and media relations.

He said about 22,000 ticket packages are accounted for, including those being reserved for the competing teams, the NCAA and the local organizing committee.

Those who already have purchased ticket packages will have their ticket locations reassigned for the new layout.

Fair point.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

I could probably go on at GREAT length about some of the idiots around me in section R on Saturday- but this probably isn't the best time for me to do so.

I'll put it this way, the only time they actively tried to do normal student section-y things were:

The "P-U-T-I-T-I-N" chant (which they somehow managed to only do when Michigan had the puck)

And the "You're not a sieve, you're a funnel. You're not a funnel, you're a ..." cheer, which they couldn't remember the words to.

But they DID know the words to "Eat ****"/"**** You", and the "Drop the puck"/"***" moron cheers. Figures.
It was much the same in Y3 where I was. IMO, a lot of the people there were there more for the spectacle and being able to say they were there than because they were hockey fans.
Like I said, every time Wisconsin scored a goal the sieve chant was a disaster because a lot of the people there didnt know the correct way to do it. When Wisconsin scored the first goal, people instantly started chanting, "sieve, sieve, sieve" and my girlfriend shook her head and was like, "you're too early guys..."
It will be nice to be back in the Kohl this weekend with the rest of the real hockey fans. :D

What did you expect 80,000 + die hard serious hockey fans??? even with the gate being 55,000, there isn't that many die hard hockey fans in madison and the nearby area. There were a lot of boss's that took there office's, family's and friends in town. Its meant to be an EVENT for everybody, not an event for only Badger hockey die hards, We can't even sellout the kohl center with those this year much less camp randall. your post has a touch of entitlement in it that really isn't called for. I'v been to 2 NHL winter classic's and its the same way, its just the way these outdoor games are but they are fun to go to either way. My dad took family that didn't know anything about hockey but without those people the event would have been a total flop with maybe 30,000 there. If done every 4 years will be a GREAT recruiting tool for the program and it doesn't hurt to expose the game to new people every now and then!!!!!!

Entitlement? Hmmm, interesting. My point is that if people are going to try to do the chants, they should at least learn the correct way to do them.
Obviously I didnt expect the entire 55,000 people to be diehard hockey fans and like I said, a lot of the people probably did go there just for the spectacle, arent really hockey fans and probably dont much care all that much about hockey.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

I lost my respect for Berenson at the NCAA 50th Anniversary celebration (1997, Frozen Four, Milwaukee). After losing in the semi-final game, he left town in a fit of pique rather than stay and attend the on-ice ceremony he was suposed to attend. That was bush.

Well, you do realize that the NCAA sets departure flight times for teams that lose, right? It's rare a losing team stays more than a few hours after the game is over. Heck, I think Michigan may have even left for the airport directly from the arena once or twice.

That's a pretty stupid reason to not respect a guy.

All the other old timers being honored seemed to find a way to be in town.

It’s certainly not the only reason, just an example. I will say this; he seems to have mellowed with age. Happens to most of us.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Also, was there a rhyme or reason as to why Michigan was wearing the blue jerseys and not the maize? Nothing like a night game where both teams are wearing their darks...

Maybe they thought, with the poor lighting, that white would blend in with the ice. Probably, though, they just thought that for a special game it was appropriate for both teams to wear their colors. I thought it came off kind of gloomy.

It just seemed like a no-brainer to me that Michigan would wear the maize sweaters. And it's not like it would have been a bad color-on-color matchup. Just looked strange with blue and red out there.

With the lighting maybe they thought the puck would be harder for the opposing goalie to pick up against the dark jersey? Just a thought.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

I don't know where you guys get "gloomy" and "strange" from. I thought it was great to see the teams in their stronger colors. Personally, I think it should be done more often. Home team should wear whatever colors they want, and the visiting team can wear whatever colors they want, as long as it doesn't conflict. Blue and red could hardly be less conflicting.

I watched it on TV. The lighting was pretty bad. Almost, nay it was, gloomy. But that matters less than what it looked like in person.

You have to be careful about granting teams latitude to wear what they want. Did anybody happen to catch the Wisconsin/Illinois basketball game they played at Illinois a few years ago where both teams wore their solid colors? You literally (and I mean literally) could not tell the two teams apart. Whomever granted permission presumably thought cardinal and orange were far enough apart, but they were wrong. It was a farce.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

I am a traditionalist, but I liked the red and blue. It's ok to do once and a while. I think the maize and red would have looked cool too.

That game is the exact reason that I would include the caveat "as long as it doesn't conflict". But if it were Illinois' blue against our red? No big deal.

This is the way a lot of soccer leagues seem to operate when it comes to jersey colors, and I think it works quite well for them. I think the Dallas Cowboys also seem to operate under this rule as well.

All of the other old timers probably weren't coaching teams that just got knocked out of the Frozen Four. I'm sure reasonable people would've lost far more respect had he abandoned his team at such a time and not flown back with them, just so he could attend a stupid ceremony.
