Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Such strong analysis on the Michigan calls. What about the Wisconsin non-calls?

If Summers gets called for the trip on Gardiner, then perhaps Summers should have been called for a double minor on that play. Let's add a slash to it. Come on, I mean how did Gardiners stick go flying five feet it front of him if no one touched his stick. Maybe Gardiner decided to throw his stick in the air to create some commotion to draw further attention to the play. Is that embellishment? Hopefully the Wisco training staff can get him some stick'um before the next game so he doesn't lose his stick with a scoring opportunity.

If Summers gets called for the slash on Geoffrion, why doesn't Geoffrion get called for goalie interference at the 1:46 mark? Geoffrion tries to skate through Hogan who is in his crease and shoves him into his own defenseman as he attempts to gather a loose puck behind the net. Perhaps Hogan should have done a Gardiner and thrown his stick over the net to embellish it?
Is there still a rule where a player goes into the crease on his own and interferes with the goalie, that it's a penalty or the face off comes out of the zone? And like Gardiner, Geoffrion did the acting like someone must have shoved me into the goalie crease, I was trying to hold off. It's crazy how that happened.

If you call the garbage and get whistle happy, call it both ways.

My only thing with the Geoffrion play was that the goalie was going to freeze the puck because it was at the side of the net, and Geoffrion helped him do that.:D
He was only trying to help:rolleyes:

Good game. UM had a ton of chances, but Guddy came up big. Sounds like he lost the second one in the lights/crowd. Agree that the ref's swallowed their whistles most of the game (Davies cross check in the 1st would have been a Major during league play), but over the course of the season, it will even itself out. Hey, at least Smith didn't go to the box!

Want to comment about the bathrooms. What where they thinking? Terrible planning, especially considering how long they had to plan for it. It is not like you have to keep the bathrooms warm all winter, just heat them up last week (and by heat up, get them to 40 degrees), get the water running again, and get the games done. If your not going to open them, bring in porta-johns. Couple people in my group missed most of the 2nd period because they were in line for the john.

It may be just me, because I've worked in event managment before, but considering the timeframe to work out these issues, it ticked me off.

Bring on the purple cows!!

That's a football student section thing. You wear opposing colors, you'll get called an a-hole. That's just how it is.

Back when I was a student, opposing fans would get ribbed like this all the time - those that took it in stride and ribbed back in good nature would come over and share a couple beers. Those that had a chip on their shoulder didn't.

I saw and heard plenty of that, and I really didn't consider that anything big (especially since blockski's right - in the past I have had a beer or two put in my hands when the chant was over). What really surprised was the two or three times where someone just decided to walk up and shove me from the front before any words were even said. I just thought that was a line you didn't cross, and it's something I don't remember happening even in East Lansing on a Michigan-Michigan State football Saturday. Of course, these guys were clearly breaking the Mendoza line on their blood alcohol level, but it's still surprising.

As I said earlier though, just about everyone else I ran into was great, and the true hockey fans were even better. My personal favorite - a 40ish women who went on and on about how much she hates the Sioux...and then, in a hushed, conspriatorial tone, said that the people in Grand Forks will treat you wonderfully if you go up there for a game :D

I lost my respect for Berenson at the NCAA 50th Anniversary celebration (1997, Frozen Four, Milwaukee). After losing in the semi-final game, he left town in a fit of pique rather than stay and attend the on-ice ceremony he was supposed to attend. That was bush.

If true, and depending on the given circumstances of his snub, I guess that pales in comparison to his accomplishments and his contributions to college hockey.

Lots of really drunk stupid folk out and about. Had a pair of winners plop themselves down in front of our section (in the area of seats that were not sold) and start trying to get a chant of "stand up old people" going for an annoyingly extended length of time (It's not a realy hard concept that you do that with around 2 minutes left as opposed to the 12 minute mark on). Eventually, after a chant of "have another" got going, they got a clue and finally shut up. While I enjoy the chants and fan participation at a UW hockey game (it truely is unique in sporting events), I generally leave that stuff to others and I am more interested in watching the game or talking about the game with my son.

Like all fan bases, UW is not immune to it's share of nuckleheads.

Blah, blah Blah.

Fixed your post.
Awww, boo hoo. Want some cheese with that whine? ;) Dont even get me started about your goalie whining about the ice being bad and knocking the net off of the crease. Gudmanson didnt seem to have anywhere near as many problems with that end of the rink.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

At Miller Park, with the roof closed?

Gross Idea, sorry...

About the goal crease, goody didn't seem to have that many issues with it and Michigan was all over him that period. It seemed like a little tactic to kill our momentum in the 3rd by hogan, which isn't really a bad idea but he did overdo it with the crease repairs.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Milewski article on the atmosphere at the game.

http://www.uscho.com/news/college-hockey/id,18058/CampRandallSceneFootballAtmosphereWithaRink.html

In short: it was a hockey game... but with a FOOTBALL ATMOSPHERE! Woooo!

I'm actually kind of offended. Is Milewski trying to say that the "football" atmosphere is some sort of an improvement? The player quotes seem to be to the effect that there were more people there, and that they sort of enjoyed Jump Around (sigh). Who are these jerkoffs that actually think the crowd was better than a Kohl Center game? Well, besides the ones that Milewski quoted...

I definetly wouldnt say the crowd was better than at a Kohl Center game. Most the people there didnt even know the correct way to do the sieve chant and when Phil did the, "we want more" chant the first time, a lot of the people were like, "huh?"
Not to mention that you could barely hear the UW band and you didnt hear the hits like you normally do. They really needed to mic the band and put several mics by the boards so that you can hear the hits much better.
The CRC was a cool event, but Id take a game at the Kohl any day. The KC is much louder and much more fun.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

I agree. I was sitting within 150 feet of the band (granted their sound was aimed out towards the playing surface) but the band was awfully hard to hear. It's also hard to hear people clapping when they're wearing gloves. Although I like the rare novelty of an outdoor game and the hockey-related hype it brings to campus, it was readily apparent to me that the atmosphere was far better in the student section at the Kohl Center.

The people quoted were probably like the Badger fan a few rows behind me. He was telling me it was his 2nd hockey game ever, went to one 10 years ago, and that it would probably be his last. Hard to know how many of the fans at the game were like that, but I know a bunch near me were there just for the spectacle, not necessarily the game.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

I could probably go on at GREAT length about some of the idiots around me in section R on Saturday- but this probably isn't the best time for me to do so.

I'll put it this way, the only time they actively tried to do normal student section-y things were:

The "P-U-T-I-T-I-N" chant (which they somehow managed to only do when Michigan had the puck)

And the "You're not a sieve, you're a funnel. You're not a funnel, you're a ..." cheer, which they couldn't remember the words to.

But they DID know the words to "Eat ****"/"**** You", and the "Drop the puck"/"***" moron cheers. Figures.

Tell me again why this stunt was good for college hockey?

To prove that they can get that big of a crowd to a hockey game so we should put the Frozen Four in a football stadium!!!!!

Oh wait, that's not working out so well either...:o :p

I'm forced to conclude it wasn't good for the sport...

How are tickets sales going for Ford Field? Poorly?

They recently moved the rink from the dead center of the field (hoping for 60,000) to one end of the field (closing admission down to 30,000). If I remember correctly.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

What exactly were you guys expecting from a crowd two and a half times bigger than the average Wisconsin crowd? They held this game at the football stadium because it was a spectacle designed to bring in new fans, not because there are 30,000 diehard, knowledgeable fans getting shut out of the KC every night.

Interesting. I'll have to look into this. I'll go if I think I'll actually be able to see something.
