COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

Those are usually robo-posts or memes created by RNC sock-puppet accounts. Unfortunately, they get amplified by actual Republican voters who like/Re-Tweet/re-post them.

There's a guy I know whose diet consists of two, if not three, Mountain Dews during the day, along with a snack that's usually something like a Little Debbie oatmeal cream cookie.

Guess who posted the meme about Easter chocolate being essential, but not seeds for fruits and vegetables?

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

Here's why you shouldn't be so quick to open things up.

During the 1918 Flu, St Louis shut down everything early, while Philadelphia decided to go along with business as usual. At one point St Louis was at 1/8 the death rate of Philadelphia. However, they opened everything up when things looked better and saw another bump, and ended up only finishing with roughly 1/2 the death rate.

If they're at least six feet apart, it technically is. ;)

6 feet apart AND less than 15 minutes within that range of space. ;)

And the officer handing out fines would write up the ticket outside of 6 feet, walk over, hand it to the person, and walk away. Boomdone. Social distancing is followed. :D

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

Right. Article in the NYT, not great, but better than their usual stuff, about how and why trump dithered in his response to the virus. First, cause he doesn't have an administration working as one, but everybody scrambling against each other for his favor.

Second, the people who he's already labeled as not credible, or not sufficiently loyal, were the ones pushing for immediate response to the virus, but since Trump had already dismissed them out of hand, what they were telling him was also dismissed. Not until he later was told the same information through preferred sources was he bothered to consider it.

Third, he doesn't like hearing bad news. This was bad news, so anyone informing him of it risked being one of those out of favor, or dismissed out of hand, so no one had the balls to deliver information to him he didn't want to hear. Scientists had a meeting scheduled to press him to immediately implement mitigation and distancing, but then he had his blowup at Sonnenier(sp?) for going direct to the public with the bad news, and so it was cancelled. Not addressed again for weeks, far too late to have the effectiveness needed.

Again, some of us are NOT saying open EVERYTHING up. Please comprehend that fact.

Person to person contact is NOT social distancing, I don't care whatever fantasy floating around in your dimbulb head makes you think it is.

And you need to comprehend that there’s no difference, in the sense of fighting this epidemic, between opening everything and opening some things.

Then explain these "essential" businesses. Yes, they are essential, but that is not social distancing, either. So, if other businesses can operate safely (that's the key), then let's open them up also.

Like I said, RNC sock-puppets. Gotta get Agolf Twitler's lame nicknames trending to please the master.

And the Republicans in the state legislature could end the SIP if they really wanted to. But like Spartan said, they'd rather sit and cry about "freedumz."

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

Now I'm seeing "Whitmer=Hitler" comparisons. Just because they can't take their power boat out or buy seeds from Meijer.

Given the specificity of the restrictions, it seems that they have actual examples of people both congregating and passing the virus. Although it won't convince everyone, it may be useful for her to show the data where sick people were getting paint, collecting soil, and going fishing with others.

And it's not as if you can't get seeds are gardening stuff- you need to pre-order it and have it delivered to your vehicle...

Whitmer did explain why preventing gardening services working makes sense.... Or someone did.

It's a lot easier and safer to do the right thing and complain about it vs. doing the wrong thing.

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

I suspect this is going to change people under about 35 for their whole lives. You can see people older than that are already so set in their presumptions about the world that they are like buggy whip manufacturers uncomprehendingly staring as automobiles fly by. Events of this magnitude (the Panic of 1893, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, 9/11) change society. We Olds are rushed even further into obsolescence and irrelevance.

People like dx and younger are going to change with this, raise their young families with new priorities and new lessons, and embody a new world. Our time is over. Judging by the selfishness and sterility of the last 40 years, thank god.

I am 40 and it definitely has changed my thinking. It is like any pattern though once you break it you can finally see it for what it is and your behavior is affected. It is why I take breaks from reading certain sites every few months, why I stopped buying season tickets to sports regularly (not to mention why I stopped caring about them as much as I used to) amongst other things. Sometimes you are so in it you dont even see that life has changed around you and you need to adjust.

Hell, I noticed the other day how little I have driven and not missed out on anything. I still go grocery shopping but that is it. No more wasted trips, no more spending on gas, and driving now the few times I do it is so much more enjoyable because I do it when I want, not all of the time.

The crazy thing is now I see how much time I wasted. I felt pressured all the time to fill every minute with work and enjoyment...now not so much. My time is better divided up and my stress is 1/10th what it was. Yes I have less (especially money) but I also NEED less and I can see that.

Well said.

One reason consumerist entities are so desperate to return to normal ASAP is the longer this goes on the more people realize it was a trap.

We are the source of our own happiness. We don't need stuff. It only gets in the way. And pursuing the money to buy it degrades us and squanders our lives.

The essential businesses CAN'T operate safely. There are workers being infected at them daily. They are open anyway because they are essential. Adding to the number open just puts greater numbers at risk.

Definitely well said. I'm about efficiency, so this hasn't affected me AS much. If there's an errand to be had, I do it before or after work. I don't make multiple trips. Once I'm home, I'm probably home for the day. I get everything lined up, do it, and that's it. For example, I like to eat out on weekends, well with Easter and all, I went out yesterday and got what I needed for yesterday and today, probably took an hour to get everything. Streamlining is the way to go.

Re: COVID-19 The 7th Part: We're Gonna Be Number One Soon!

As a DoorDash driver, I've picked up from IHOP, Applebee's, and a few other establishments offering curbside pickup. The poor worker I make contact with is wearing gloves and a mask each time. They can't stay home.

But sure, let's open IHOP back up.

However, there are businesses (mainly small ones) that CAN operate safely. So why are they not able to conduct said business? :)

EDIT: again, I say look closely before approval

A handful of people will remember this and apply it to their lives. But I doubt enough to really make an impact will. Every economic downturn teaches the same lesson over and over again, and it does not stick too long to most. The only difference between this time and 2008 is that a virus is keeping us from spending vs. just bad business decisions forcing people to lose jobs.
