Every red area has always wanted to kick the "urban" (read: minority) portion out. Upstate vs NYC. Eastern Oregon vs Portland. Virginia vs NoVa (in that case the "minorities" are people who graduated high school).

Country Mouse always thinks life would be idyllic without those sinful city slickers, being blissfully unaware that rural America is completely subsidized by urban America and wouldn't last a month without it.

I dont get why they like him so much...he almost never says anything that jibes with their point of view. What because he said some half hearted stuff about masks? (which still wasnt saying not to wear them just that their effectiveness is lower than people think) The guy was saying this is a problem before even Fauci was IIRC. They were using the Stanford fraud to discredit him early on now all of a sudden they love him...

I could maybe see blue state governors issuing orders that would be limited to their states' high-density urban counties (or letting counties/cities issue such orders themselves), but statewide lockdowns won't happen without legal battles and unwashed armies of Cleetuses marching on state capitols.

How else do you get cases way down? The vaccine will help, but at best it will only be maybe 70% effective and that leaves 100 million people susceptible to the virus.

MAC cancels all fall sports, football included. While driven largely by the fact they will not be making the appearance money they make as cannon fodder for power-5 type schools, this seems like a fairly significant domino.

As that pitcher for the Nationals noted, sports are the reward for a functioning society. We clearly are not.

I wonder if the football coaches among the SEC, B1G, PAC-12 and the other big names had been doing PSAs for the last 4 months about wearing masks and avoiding all large groups, would that have made a difference in how the mouth breathers in this country would have conducted themselves?

It's really too bad that 35-40% of this country gave us no choice but to go one of two routes: Either accept death on a massive and unprecedented scale, or disrupt society to the point where it will likely be at least another year before we get back to "normal" in this country. We're not going to have a vaccine ready and out in distribution among the masses before late in the winter of 2020-21, and probably not until spring realistically. Anti-vaxxers among the U.S. population (and that number will explode when a defeated trump tweets repeatedly about not trusting a "democrat vaccine") will make it highly ineffective as far as vaccines go. And the cycle will continue for most of the rest of 2021, until this virus finally effects enough people and maybe mutates into something that more can live with.
