I saw a post on a Reddit thread that gives an unlikely but plausible explanation:

It’s voter suppression by death. COVID impacts urban areas more and it hits lower income and black people more often. What do urban, low income and black all have in common? Democrats.

Actually that’s a huge reason why we have such a high vaccination rate. The Native Tribal health system has made a huge push to get communities vaccinated and they’ve been pretty successful in getting people to take it. Long memories of large portions of the population being wiped out from Spanish Flu and other diseases like diphtheria have played a huge part in Alaska’s response. It’s also why Dunleavy can’t override local measures like Abbot or DeSantis.
 
A friend tweeted that Abbott wants the Spring Break business. Kids will travel there and bring the virus back. Good times.
