If I can be 6 feet away, with a mask, outside, then maybe....maybe. If I know them personally (so I know what precautions they've taken in previous weeks), that would increase the chances of me showing up.

The outbreak in South Korea attached to the guy who visited 5 different nightclubs seems quite worrisome. Here you have a nation that had been doing great work at keeping the spread of the virus mostly manageable and NPR reported 54 cases have been linked to that single person. If people think our meager (by comparison) mitigation efforts have done half the job of eliminating the virus among our 330,000,000 people as the efforts have been in South Korea, they're nuts.

I bet this thing is about ready to explode in this country and we're probably not even going to have a lull where we get down to just a couple hundred deaths a day. We're never going to test and trace effectively, not even close. The virus in this country is probably not going to drop off until we develop herd immunity, and by the time we have that, millions will have been made extremely ill, and many hundreds of thousands of those will have died. We can't even get republicans to wear fvcking masks because the men find it emasculating (I don't know why, it's just that someone somewhere said that, and the notion just took off) and their women would probably get smacked in the mouth if they told their man to wear a mask.

Oh well, this virus is probably what we needed. By the end of 2020 we will either have adults back in charge or the nation will be in ruins. And all you phony patriot, confederate republicans can go fvck yourselves with a coronavirus infected hot poker. You're ruining my country. Go drink your bleach and die. Please. And do it quickly. The rest of us who want a functioning nation are waiting, and speaking for myself, my patience is running out.

The deaths are gonna spike, and red states and the federal gov will insist it’s Obama’s swine flu rather than covid

Per my dad - my uncle and wife #2 have declared they will not wear masks and they will not get the vaccine when it's available.

Sigh...

A couple of times I had posts for cruise board I read. Mostly about people downplaying the virus, sometimes a HUGE amount.

The fact the people are doing that will pretty much kill the cruise industry, as it means there will be continuous break outs of a virus that actually kills people. As opposed to viruses that they are equating this with, especially noro. Or they think that the response was fast and decisive- as if the country response is what is happening to everyone- first S Korea and Taiwan actually responded quickly and decisively- and now they are more in clean up mode tracking the individuals that are having small outbreaks; second- Italy and Spain- we all look down on them on how bad it was there and most still do. Yet because they took drastic response, abit late, they are starting to come out of this.

Instead- people still think we've both done enough and too much, in spite of hospitals being overwhelmed, deaths not actually going down nationally, etc. Nobody realized that the longer we drag this out, the worse it will be for the economy, and companies will be forced to shut down because they have no healthy people working anymore. Just look at the meat plants where there were almost no controls- they had to close on their own because too many people got sick. Duh.

And back to the cruises- they are petri dishes, yes. And had we taken quick and decisive action, that would not be a long term problem. But we didn't, and now an avenue of a vacation that we appreciate a LOT is now more at risk than before.

I wonder if these same people were up in arms when privileged white people were calling the cops to "snitch" on innocent young black men or women who were napping in common areas of student centers at colleges? Or innocently going for a run in the "wrong" neighborhoods? Yeah, I didn't think so.

This also illustrates once again how disconnected from reality most of the right is in this country. Sure, the things some are worrying about are bad. Job losses, depression, suicide, the loss of small businesses? All bad things. But then the disconnect starts. You can put about 97% of the blame for all of that on two things. One, the inadequacy of our healthcare system that has been breaking and broken for generations. It could have been designed to cope with a widespread pandemic a little better, but because the profit motive rules all, it was not. And two, most likely the single worst response to any crisis this nation has ever seen since its founding 250 years ago. Had either one of those two factors not been present, we could have ridden this out with either moderate disruption (better president) or little disruption (working healthcare system). Couple both of those, and then throw in the spirit of country first that used to be commonplace in our country, and we might have seen infection levels and death totals like South Korea.

Worst of all, this ain't anywhere near over yet. At best, we are looking at tens (more likely hundreds) of thousands of more people dying. Insurance costs are going to skyrocket, putting an unsustainable strain on the costs of an already over-burdened and inefficient health care system. At least if we're lucky, the adults in the room will be taking over management of this crisis in full by 2021. If not, the dire forecasts many of us were predicting under a trump presidency will be coming to pass. And by dire I mean you ain't seen nothing yet. Be proud, republicans. Be very proud.
