For those looking at the IHME model as either an expectation of what we might see or questioning how wrong it could be, it is based on some lofty assumptions. The IHME model that is now projecting 135k deaths is based on strict social distancing remaining in place until new cases drop to a rate of 1 per million people. Their model does not account for ANY easing of social distancing until that point. Once that point is reached it assumes there is a robust system for testing, tracing and isolating to prevent any large flareups. It also assumes this completely ends at the beginning of August. Basically it's worthless because America can't do any of that.

The lack of reliability of testing (false positives on antibody tests and false negatives on the actual COVID tests themselves) is going to be a huge hindrance for actually trying to fight this thing down the line.

Thanks for not testing any of these tests for months into the pandemic, CDC! Bunch of freaking geniuses...

Yeah, the IHME model has been pretty much worthless since the very beginning, when they severely underestimated the tails in Spain, France, and Italy. Even their latest update shows an inability to take into account the days of the week effect in reporting, putting a spike in their model in the first couple days of May when there was no spike there in the first place. The model is actually currently overestimating deaths by ~400 per day currently (if we're going by the official count - the death count will be much higher after the fact regardless) but is almost certain to be underestimating deaths starting in late May through, well, whenever the hell this wave ends (and it won't be soon)

But one also has to remove the deaths from auto accidents, since driving is WAY down. And probably remove the shooting deaths- since those are not really comparable, too. I guess my point is that when that comparison is made, there are a number of deaths that are obviously not COVID or influenza. And they are easy to take out of the total number- especially when the rate of deaths will change due to lock downs.

I haven’t looked up nationwide, but MN’s fatality rates per car accident are up since COVID shelter-in-place has been in effect. People are driving faster and with less care with fewer vehicles on the road. Is there a strong case to count those as some sort of tertiary COVID death count?
