Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

That's the most EFF 'd up thing...this is changing by the hour, it seems like. What was crazy talk this morning is now valid talk. That's how fast all of this is moving.

It was never crazy to the people who were following this from the beginning. Except now we all aren't so alarmist and stupid. Now we are smart and it is playing out just like they said it would. Gotta say this is one time where 'I told you so' sucks the hairy pickle.

There were precautions...
Then this afternoon, whole states were basically shutting down. That's a bit of a jump....

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

Well we’re basically having more cases than Italy already at the equal time point. This has been coming for days now. I’m not surprised at all.

John Oliver with some humor- America shut down all major sports, and hockey.

The following, I'm being completely honest on....

Italy, S Korea, etc....comparing cases in those countries to those in the US, where there is a MUCH larger land mass...it's all percentages, but with a twist. Smaller country, should be easier to control (assuming proper measures and all). Italy has said, "We're closed." That'd be like, I dunno, Missouri or Utah or something shutting down, correct?

No. This is what should have happened way earlier. The States were waiting for Federal lead but it never came. In fact they tried to down play. Then it hit critical mass where trying to toe the Federal line became impossible and they pulled the trigger.

Earlier this week there were a number of actions. There was no support at Fed level and mixed messages about how magical interventions would rescue us- the mythical vaccine, the mythical medicines, the mythical nonsense about the Mexican Border while letting in folks from the UK

See the comments on this and other thread. Read your own. People were not doing what was needed. they couldn't seem to comprehend what they needed to do. The States basically decided if the Feds were doing nothing, the messaging was still being contradictory, they needed to just put the hammer down.

The community spread is really ramping up. They couldn't wait any longer.

NH went from pretending it was fine to poof. Our State tried the rely on people to be grown ups and rapidly gave up .

To be expected...we have more people.

The grids were at first almost mirroring the first countries, number by number. We have more travel, more people who are entitled to do what they want rather than social conscience. We have no clear message on how to respond. We are managing testing poorly and we have problems with not being able to be tested or stay out of work. Our numbers are now surpassing the Italian curve.

That's what I mean. Most of the population took precautions, did their thing, etc...then "wait, wteff?" Yeah, everything is closed now. Same with the sportsball. Things escalated quickly in the last few days.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

That's the most embarrassing part. Where normally the Federal level will provide leadership or even oversight to state level agencies, there was no Federal leadership. "All was well; we got it contained; it will blow over."

Finally state and local agencies decided enough was enough.

Imagine if the Governors and Mayors all said "nah, we'll just let the CDC run this?"

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

But we weren’t able to test. This has been going around for weeks. Look at Seattle and now NY. Precautions for many didn’t start until the last half of this week

No. Most of the population did not take precautions. Read your posts. Multiple posts. All saying the same thing- if I am healthy I should go to a restaurant. I should be able to live my life. That is not taking precautions.

Precautions are what everyone had given up asking people to do and are now mandating

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

I did not say should. I said they could, and not be shamed for it. Matter of choice, assuming they weren't a higher risk, etc etc etc.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

BREAKING: Los Angeles is following other major cities in the U.S. by shutting down bars, clubs and entertainment venues and implementing restrictions on restaurants as the country grapples with the spread of the coronavirus. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Sunday night he was taking executive action that would temporarily close bars, clubs, entertainment venues and other establishments in the city starting at midnight. http://hill.cm/aC5q0x6

Don't go out just to prove a point, but also don't avoid going out because of fear, if that makes sense, you know?

Here, the WaPo put out this story to demonstrate the social reclusion approach is the most effective at controlling the spread.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

It's not even the total # of cases because many people can just battle this thing at home. It comes down to # of cases requiring hospitalization. And again Italy has one of the oldest populations in the world. So not surprisingly they have been hit hard by hospitalizations and ultimately deaths:

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-deaths-from-coronavirus-are-so-high-in-italy/

That's why I think comparisons to Italy is not apples to apples. That is not to diminish the elderly/at risk population in the US. It's obviously still a big concern.
