Here you go. Lazy me just went witht he first article I could find so sorry it is cnn. The numbers are correct.
Yeah, I saw that article earlier. I don’t think it says all 330 million of us are carriers. You simply can’t tell based solely on symptoms or lack of symptoms. For example, in Minnesota I saw a report earlier today that about 900 people were tested and less than 30 are positive.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

In the middle of a meeting on Friday someone at our Connecticut office got pulled out and told he needed to go into quarantine because he had recently flew back from France. He was teaching a workshop and my co-worker had to take over (from Maine)

DIAF you twat.

40% of America is whoever @Katie Williams is. I've considered myself a Christian for all my life, but I don't think I can anymore because people like whoever this Katie Williams are, I just want them to all die. And I want them to suffer while they die.

Yeah, you’re absolutely right. Most of us haven’t been exposed yet.

More than we know have and it’s growing exponentially though.

We have 265 million more people than Italy so I am not sure simply comparing number of cases tells us much..

I think this is an important point. I agree we can learn a lot about what is happening elsewhere. But when you look at those charts, the numbers are almost exactly like Italy’s even though our population is 5.5 times as large.

We’ve got maybe 900,000 hospital beds whereas they have less than 200,000. I think we were running around 95% of capacity. If Italy was close to that before this problem, they had maybe 7000 open beds compared with our 35,000. You find yourself with 10,000 cases, it’s a big difference.

Could we get to Italy if we let this get out of control? Sure. But we’re in a lot better situation than they were at the same point of the disease progression in their country.

This should be a fairly simple concept. No one said all 330 million people are carriers. They are saying we have no way of knowing which of the people are carriers. That means everyone is a carrier until proven otherwise. You think the people at Biogen had any idea? I can tell you, living in this state, that the answer is no. It took for ever to figure out who was there and they were still tracking down folks as of a few days ago. You can say 30 out of 900 but they are only testing people with symptoms. It is dam hard to get that test done. Read the bleeding article.

"We now know that asymptomatic transmission likely [plays] an important role in spreading this virus," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
Osterholm added that it's "absolutely clear" that asymptomatic infection "surely can fuel a pandemic like this in a way that's going to make it very difficult to control."

And this is a prime example of why American response is so stupidly failing.

Re: Covfefe 19: now in 3D

What does the total population of a country matter? The only thing it may impact is the total number of people that are infected. I'm having trouble understanding why the virus should be able to move more quickly from person to person just because there are more of us total.

Not really sure why you’re so hostile. I did read the article. As I said, you can’t tell if you’re a carrier just based upon symptoms alone.

We're on the same page here. Important that the full context is given.

What would you know, you’re just a doctor! I’m gonna put away my epi degree also lol.

And Bob Gray has appeared in the other thread!

Huh? The total population absolutely matters when you're simply looking at the number of cases. Unless of course you're saying that despite our huge population we have a worse infrastructure than Italy to handle the same # of cases. Do we have fewer resources/hospitals/beds across the country?

From the WHO...
In terms of hospital sector infrastructure, in 2012 Italy had 3.4 hospital beds per 1000 people; 80% of which are dedicated to acute care (higher than the EU average of 69%).
From Peterson-KFF...
Total hospital beds per 1,000 population, 2016 or nearest year
United States 2.8

That's what we're saying.

I'll put it this way. Why would having more total people mean the virus should be transmitted more quickly? Doesn't make sense. Maybe if a were a lot denser than Italy, but we definitely are not.

I think it can play a role. Italy’s 60 million are crammed into a space the size of New Mexico, so obviously it would be a lot harder to do any sort of voluntary social distancing. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the cases are showing up in more dense population areas.
