Methinks you didnt give a crap about the case before, except to criticize those that protested...

I did care. I read the news reports, watched interviews, and waited until the report was released. The cops acted justly. Am I sad a human lost his life? Of course. IMO, justice happened.

Sunday: Drunk female from Missouri steals U of North Dakota Ford Explorer Police Interceptor. She gets 30 miles (over to Crookston, MN) and then hits the ditch at what one can safely assume is a very high velocity. Vehicle is obliterated in the crash, so much that the engine disengages from the transmission and separates completely out of the engine compartment!

Note that in the Photo the driver's compartment is completely in tact ... but the rear (prisoner's) seat is nearly crushed to being too small for a human.

More proof of the Vast Cop Conspiracy! :D

This is lovely. The Oklahoma highway patrol can now user a scanner to drain your bank account using your bank card if they "suspect you may have money tied to some type of crime."

All you then have to do is prove you have a "legitimate" claim to that money, and they'll give it back. How nice of them!

Oh yeah, the company that provides the scanners keeps almost 8% of your $$$.

Note to self, lie about having an ATM card when asked in Oklahoma for fear of false civil asset forfeiture. God that whole thought process of things is just completely wrong. Police need to be pressed to a higher standard on being able to use civil asset forfeiture. What a crazy concept now being abused to line pockets of police departments. Nothing more than a complete money grab.

I have a suspicion that if you sorted all US small towns in ascending order of population, did a running sum, and drew a line when you hit Chicago's population, the per capita rate of shootings would be much higher in good ol' cracker Real 'Murica. :(

From my research back in 1999 senior thesis paper (Right to Carry Concealed Weapons and Impact on Murder Rates), you'd have to up that to a county basis as cities don't keep reliable enough data. It was a major frustration for me at the time. Even then, because I lacked the time, I had to go up to statewide stats. Even those weren't perfect. It turns out that states don't like to reliably track certain negative indicators in depth.

I'm not sure if I can find statistics on "shootings", but if we're talking about gun murders I'm not sure you can reach that conclusion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States_by_state

Kep's best attempt at aping Fresh Fish's concern trolling doesn't explain Vermont at all. That's one of those scary redneck states where you can conceal-carry without a permit - that's even nuttier than Texas! Hmm...there must be other factors for gun violence.

Oh, right: poverty, gang warfare (largely committed with untraceable guns made overseas and smuggled into the US), the drug trade, etc. Not much of that going on in Vermont (other than "trading" the latest strains of pot with your neighbor anyway).

I think I'm seeing a pattern here, and the rough outline of a solution. Solve poverty, solve the gang problem, and you're well on your way to solving the gun violence problem.

Perhaps, like they do with my commuter buses, they disable the computers in patrol cars while the vehicle is in motion.

A teenager dies after distracted CHP officer slams into car

Officials say a Northern California teenager is dead after a California Highway Patrol officer became distracted and rear-ended another vehicle.

The Glenn County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that 15-year-old Weston Sites of Willows, Calif., was pronounced dead at the scene along Interstate 5 near the town of Orland.

CHP Sgt. Tony Odell told television station KCRA-TV that the officer was looking down at his computer about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

He didn't notice that northbound traffic was slowing until it was too late to avoid rear-ending the vehicle where Sites was riding in the back seat.

They'll investigate themselves and find they did nothing wrong. After all, driving laws don't apply when you have the magic badge, and all he has to do is claim he was running a license plate to make sure it was valid.

I've often wondered why they are allowed to get away with looking at friggin computers while cell phones and whatnot are (rightfully) illegal.

In NYS, computers are included with the cell phone laws. However, the magic badge trumps any law.
