Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

No dumber than Intelligent Design.

Ironic how you mock "intelligent design" when it comes to biology yet are an equally fervent defender of "intelligent design" when it comes to economics....a believer in natural selection when it comes to biology yet suspicious that free markets can deliver better results than central planning....

Quite the false equivalency. You're comparing apples to oranges: or in this case, imaginary apples to oranges.

That's a very poor analogy as we'll see in a minute. And by the way I like free markets within reason and will preserve them when y'all get wise and crown me Emperor Kepler the Wise Albeit Occasionally Verbose.

I oppose unfettered capitalism as put forward by the right for two reasons. (1) It isn't unfettered -- the first thing wealth does is warp the rules so they gain unfair advantages over consumers as well as competitors. (2) It is morally blind, so free markets don't care if say a third of the population starves to death if that is part of the equilibrium point that maintains the highest revenue for the supplier.

But you make my point for me wonderfully about putting regulations on the free market by comparing economics to biological evolution. Left to itself, biological evolution weeds out the sick with cold efficiency. We humans have developed a choking red tape regulation on the free market of biological evolution known as medicine. With it, we impose limits on the free market of biological evolution. We do that because we assert that we as human beings have higher aims than mere cold equations and efficiency.

Thank you for an excellent arrow to add to the liberal quiver. That will prove very useful in helping talk to more intellectually honest thinkers about the benefits of economic regulation. :)

Funny how you ignore the economics 101 lesson on market failures. The free market is a means to an end, but it's far from perfect.

Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

Kind of like whining about "fake news" when a sensationalist Earhart documentary is rushed to air.

Nothing the History Channel does can be taken seriously ever since they green-lit crap like Ancient Aliens. It's entertainment, nothing more.

Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

History hasn't been good since it stopped being WWII 24/7

Didn't it used to be nicknamed the Hitler channel?

Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

I don't remember history ever saying the wrong side won.

I meant that the Civil War series always seemed to dwell on the Confederacy which, to be fair, was a lot more interesting and colorful than the Union. They were also playing to audience interest in that slave states masturbate about the Civil War while nobody in the post-indoor plumbing portion of the US ever thinks about it.

We now have American Heroes Channel and
Military History channel (FIOS 125 & 126).

I miss Discovery Wings.

Are they the ones who do WW2 in color? Those were very good. There was also a series that did computer modeling of famous battles, particularly air battles, that was excellent (can't vouch for accuracy but it was wicked fun).

Re: Conspiracy Theory Du Jour

I believe H2 or History did the WWIIiC. They still have them on around D-Day, Memorial Day, and the other military holidays.

If youngins want to see what THC looked like in 1998, just watch it on Memorial Day. There was a point where it was just wall-to-wall WW2, Civil War, and, the camel's nose under the tent for the later supernatural UFO crap, "Battles of Biblical History," which was in fact an incredibly cool and detailed description of ancient military strategy and tactics, overlaid with some Magic Book folderal to keep the Thumpers interested.

History died for me with Ancient Aliens, Ice Road Truckers, Pawn Stars *shudder*, and all the other pseudohistory and reality garbage they run now.

Ice Road Truckers did it. It was the first reality show they ran. Supposedly when the first Nielsen dropped it outdrew all the rest of their programming combined. That was when the A&E execs said, "Hey. Wait a minute..."

A&E, History, and Discovery used to be the crown jewels (IMHO) of what television programming could be. It was magnificent. The Walking With... series, Biography, almost anything THC put out. I pour out a 40 of the sands of time every time I think about it.
