Re: Completely Unwoven: Business, Economics, and Tax Policy 4.0

I'm all for it. No more trying to figure out what time a sporting event "actually" occurs at, no more of those pesky Pacific Islands skipping days or re-living days when the date line hops around, no more trying to figure out what time I can safely call home when I'm doing field work. One standard 24 hour clock. Sign me up.

Re: Completely Unwoven: Business, Economics, and Tax Policy 4.0

Maybe we compromise. Have a 24-hour* "standard earth time" (just go with GMT fer chrissake) and then have local times designated by relation to sunrise and sunset. May I humbly suggest:

Matins (midway between sunset and sunrise)
Lauds (sunrise - 3 hours)
Prime (sunrise)
Terce (sunrise + 3 hours )
Sext (midway between sunrise and sunrise)
None (sunset - 3 hours)
Vespers (sunset)
Compline (sunset + 3 hours)

Clocks can work just like GPS, working against a table of sunrises and sunsets. The interval between Compline/Matins/Lauds and Terce/Sext/None wax and wane through the year depending on latitude.

* Of course, we should really just go all the way to sidereal time.

Someone's never heard of UTC... :p

These guys could give Procrustes a real run for his money!

There are 360[SUP]o[/SUP] of longitude in the world and 24 hours in a day, and so having 24 time zones which each cover roughly 15[SUP]o[/SUP] of longitude makes sense. I can see wanting every country in the same 15[SUP]o[/SUP] of longitude to be on the same time, and also I can see countries wanting to adjust the 15[SUP]o[/SUP] plus or minus a few degrees to keep the entire country (unless too large) in a single time zone, but one universal world-wide clock?

Uh, huh. Now usury is just a synonym for American Bank.
Wait until negative interest rates get here like they are starting to do in Europe. Then the banks will charge you to keep "your" money with them.

Thieves are going to love it, and our credit card purchasing days will be put on hiatus. Cash will be the order of the day, and most consumer accounts that aren't already invested in some security or another will either be closed or maintained at about their minimum requirements to keep them open - then balances added just in time to pay bills.

If I were a bank executive, I'd refuse going negative and simply set a floor rate of 0% on all checking and savings accounts. The headaches of dealing with irate customers and the daily cash transaction volumes wouldn't be worth the small bit of interest collected.

We aren't going to have negative rates. Stop listening to Glenn Beck and the other loon ball alarmists.

Re: Completely Unwoven: Business, Economics, and Tax Policy 4.0

Actually, you know what?

Maybe we are. You should definitely go out and convert everything you have in the bank to bearer bonds.

Tally sticks were good enough for my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-granddad and they're good enough for me.

Negative interest rates happened during the Great Depression.
