Columbine father

mookie1995

there's a good buck in that racket.
Guess our national leaders didn't expect this, hmm? On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton , Colorado , was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness.. The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good &*evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers. "The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart. In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA -because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent. I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.*Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.*
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,*
That God is what we need!*"*Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.*"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge. Dare to examine*your own heart before casting the first stone!*My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"*Darrell ScottDo what the media did not - - let the nation hear this man's speech. Please send this out to everyone you can.*God Bless

Re: Columbine father

You may remember Craig Scott. He comforted other brothers and sisters whose siblings hadn't been accounted for until he learned they had all made it out alive and his sister was dead. He had been in the library, and watched his friend, Isaiah Shoals, murdered right in front of him. Katy Couric conducted the most powerful interview I've ever seen. Early in the morning, in the darkness, with snow falling. And Craig was there with Mr. Shoals. This slender blond boy holding hands with the big African Amercian man. And Craig told of the moment his friend had been shot dead. Mr. Shoals reacted as if he had been shot. I wept, as I assume virtually everyone did.

It is inevitable in the wake of these (thankfully) infrequent events that there will be calls "to do something" and pass some law. We're seeing this phenomenon in the wake of the recent shootings in Ohio. The problem is, there doesn't seem to be any legislative solution to this problem. Speaking only for myself, if you can make the case that a new law will reduce the liklihood of school shootings, sign me up. But ask yourself, how many laws did Klebold and Harris break? And those laws did nothing to stop those worthless pieces of sh*t.

Perhaps the solution resides in the CSNY classic, "Teach your children well" ?

When parents understood that they were supposed to mold children into adults, that mattered. For the past 40 years or so, we have had an increasing number of people who are still children themselves giving birth to more children, many of whom then, while still children, also give birth. I wonder how much of a link there might be, empirically?

A social worker I knew had among her caseload a woman who was a grandmother before age 30, for example. How much personal responsibility can that person have imbued in her children? How well could that person have taught her children to bear up under frustration, when she herself lacked those skills?

I believe it was the National Alliance of Businessmen who years ago had a print ad that made essentially the same point. It showed four (or was it 5?) generations of black women standing on a stoop somewhere, all of them on welfare. While I agree with you in principle, Klebold and Harris were from upper middle class, in tact families. IIRC, one of the fathers even worked from his home. They had gotten into trouble stealing radios or something and had totally snowed the people who were in charge of their case. They were somehow able to cover up that raging anger they had and convince the social workers that they were just ordinary kids who had done some bad things. And they were going to behave properly from now on. On the weekend before the massacre they went to their prom! Somebody suggested those two were operating in a parallel universe. Works for me.

Re: Columbine father

I know plenty of atheists who have more morality than folks that believe in God. But, let's keep this line of rhetoric going.

I seriously don't recall too many domestic terrorists or serial killers who were born to teenage mothers. Anecdotaly, the "normal kid from a good family who just kind of kept to himself" seems to be more the norm. My recollection does not constitute a scientific study, however!

Teenage pregnancy is an issue, of course - but I'm not sure it's really linked to THIS issue.

Sorry if I was less than clear....I was suggesting that perhaps both of these separate issues might stem from the same source problem, a breakdown in how we raise our children overall.

The issue of teenage pregnancy is perhaps linked more to urban violence (gangs, "wilding")??

Apart from proving once again what we all know about you, what's the friggin' point here?

Guns don't kill people *, bullets fired from guns kill people.

Re: Columbine father

a very complicated issue and we certainly all won't have the same opinion...but if we are a country that requires all school buses to stop at RR crossings, all extension cords to be tested at UL, expiration dates on milk, cancer warnings on cigarettes etc couldn't we become a little more conservative on the purchase of weapons (especially automatic assault rifles) without throwing the constitution out the window? Is it really the current situation or elimination of the 2nd A? Those are the only two stations on this dial?

Sure the aforementioned CO. kids didn't use assault weapons and they didn't buy them at a 'gun collectors conference', but not every kid is killed in a school bus by a freight train and we still have that law. I didn't think we refused to try to make cars safer just because sometimes people are killed while sober, wearing seatbelts and driving the speed limit.

I'm willing to take a lot of grief on this one but, to date, nobody has convinced me it isn't worth the effort to try to reduce gun violence.

And no, I wouldn't rather have my head beaten in by a Louisville Slugger, but when was the last time a 4 year old across the street was killed in a drive-by knife fight?

Be specific please, what is the antecedant of "it?" And what is it about "it" that makes you think it would have stopped Klebold and Harris?
