Colorado First Night Battles: Union, CC, Denver and The Air Force Dec 30th and 31st

Re: Colorado First Night Battles: Union, CC, Denver and The Air Force Dec 30th and 3

One big factor to last night's Denver win was the impact of strength of schedule. As we start the second half it was clear that the tough series we've had (UMD, CC, Tech, UNO, plus single games against BC, BU and Miami) have made us ready to play against anyone. Union is a talented team but they had only faced Yale and Michigan in single games. They did start the season against Western. They also played the Bobcats and Merrimack. Clearly our schedule was tougher and that pays off going into the second half. DU has really done a quality job with scheduling over the last couple of years.

Union plays a fast, disciplined game. One big weakness was their play in the corners. DU won most of the puck battles especially in the O and N zones. If they can't make the adjustment against CC, I expect the score will be lopsided down there on the big sheet.

The other big factor was Gwoz and his staff making the adjustment to focus on D. The end result was the boys played such a smarter game last night. They looked so much more confident and comfortable with the puck. I think they've got them prepared for the battle tonight too. Can't wait for that game. I have a ton of respect for the Air Force program.

I can't tell if Union didn't play their game last night or DU took them out of it. Union definitely lost a lot more of the puck battles than they usually do and their offensive inconsistency, inability to finish was apparent once again. Union is trying to strengthen their schedule but it is difficult for a small program with limited resources do a lot of traveling and you will never see DU or CC or similar elite powers at Messa. IMO, Denver even if not at full strength is the best team they've played this year and games like this and tonight's will hopefully help Union where it needs it most, in gaining seasoning for the postseason where they have regularly laid an egg.

One thing that still has me puzzled is why coach Bennett started Stevens in place of no. 1 Grosenick. My hunch is that Grosenick who is not a big kid and who lost 15 lbs over the past month while fighting pneumonia is still not 100% and he didn't want to wear him out in back to back games at altitude.

Good observations--and more evidence that tonight's game should be amazing. Strength of schedule shouldn't be an issue tonight as AFA has already faced UND and MSU in close games on the road. I'll be looking at the corner battles... see you at the game!

We were puzzled by that also. I hadn't heard that he had been sick.

Dubbie called it. Hope he's wrong about tomorrow. I think CC will slap Union around big time tomorrow.

Why? I called a 3-1 Denver win.
