College Hockey...getting way too soft!

Re: College Hockey...getting way too soft!

The fact that you have to keep quoting the rule only strenghtens the argument that it is not as black and white of a call as you believe. It is a judgement call and it should have been a minor penalty if anything. Hard hits do not equal a major penalty and getting thrown out of the game. Unfortunate things happen, injuries etc. if they do it doesn't mean the hit was a major penalty.

No, I think it strengthens the argument that there are a lot of stupid people on USCHO who can't understand what they are reading.

He posted the rule in response to one of my posts, last time. But I never disagreed with the Gleason penalty, so that can't be the reason. I think he has Asperger's or something.

Re: College Hockey...getting way too soft!

Exactly. Most players were coached to "Keep your head up" and that if your head was down, you were "fair game" to be hit head on. That may be true in the NHL (where the CTH emphasis is on eliminating the blind side hits, rather than head-down hits), but the NCAA point of emphasis is clearly wider than the NHL. The NCAA "edge" has shifted from the "clean hit" free-pass benefit of the doubt going to the hitter to a big penalty if you don't pull up in time and pop someone in the head when it's down.
People may not like the fact that hockey is going to become a less violent game, but I'd rather have these players still in the rink than in the hospital, or god forbid, in the cemetary. Hockey is still a great game without contact to the head, and if you can't live without that, there is always MMA or other bloodsports out there to get your violence fix.
It doesn't matter what team we are talking about. As a Harvard fan, if a Harvard player did what Malone did to Martin, I would want him to sit for 5 games. I don't care if he was Harvard's best player.
There are things in life that are bigger than wins and losses on a sheet of ice - it's unfortunate that the Malone / Martin incident happened, but I would bet that it was one of the biggest lessons that Malone had ever learned in his short life thus far....and if Martin had been paralyzed....
This incident is a real coaching moment for all hockey programs (from the NHL to pee wee) and shame on the coaches if they don't all take their players aside and use video of this incident to discuss reckless hits and the long-term damages (physical & psychological to both participants) that can occur.

I'm with Puck Swami and bothman. I wonder if the NCAA is making efforts to insure that referees, in all the conferences, adjust their penalty calling in light of the Malone/Martin incident?

Re: College Hockey...getting way too soft!

You all know, college hockey is a game with terrific speed, physicality and explosive contact. Kids now have fine-tuned weight, conditioning and nutritional programs. The game is absolutely played at light speed with six foot something-highly skilled players that want nothing more than to separate their opponent from the puck often resulting in tremendous collisions. There is absolutely nothing soft about our sport. Nothing!

I believe the original intent of the thread is to find fault with the way refs are calling the game. To this, I can only say that I truely believe the intent is to keep these kids safe (from each other) in an era where the athletes are supercharged, supersized freight trains about to go off track.

Man do I love this game!

BINGO!

I don't even need to bring my opinions into this as the rule couldn't be clearer as written. But they'll keep trying to ram the square peg into the round hole.

Re: College Hockey...getting way too soft!

Injuries in hockey can often be caused by anger and frustration being allowed to build up in players. I don't know if some coaches encourage anger and hot-headedness or if they just can't control their players. One way or another it happens, and it's not pretty.

It appears Coach Eaves and the Badgers have a little work to do in this department.

I just don't want to see anybody get hurt or possibly die, because Eaves can't control his players. I mean that net could've hurt Ben Blood if he hadn't moved in time.

If you didn't look like a complete tool before...(can't believe I'm defending Badgers fans)...do you see ANY of them defending how stupid of a play that was by Smith? Parise, they talk all the time about how much of a hothead Smith is and that he needs to tone it down.
As has been stated before, EVERY team has players that will or have made a hit like Malone did on Martin, Gleason did on Simonelli, and Hextall did on Murray. The difference is, there is a perception here that the fans of those teams do not condone or defend their player's behavior or actions. There are a good portion of UND fans that go absolute bonkers when something happens to their player (Genoway last year), and I can understand that. But when those same people turn around and try to defend the Frattin hit on Wehrs last yaer, or any of the hits above and try to say they are not penalties and/or 5 minutes majors and a DQ and in fact the victim should take responsibility for the play, that is when people get upset.

You're not defending us. You're defending common sense as it relates to hockey.

Something these tools (your word :D) don't seem to have much of.

Maybe moving to the BTHC isn't such a bad idea after all.

Well said, but I don't think it will sink in.

I disagree with HoosierBBall_GopherHockey. I think those hits were only game misconducts, not DQ's. I would like some DQ though. Mint Oreo Blizzards are good.

Re: College Hockey...getting way too soft!

I didn't see anything in your post that disagreed with what I wrote in my post that you quoted, so I assume you agree with me. Thanks for your support.

 Whatever.

And Dirty,
I get game misconduct and DQ's mixed up sometimes. My bad. :o I prefer chocolate chip cookie dough blizzards myself.
