No it was pretty much expected. He brought embarrassment upon himself and the school and he has yet to coach a game...standard practice. hell all Mike Price did was go to a strip club after being hired by Alabama and it was enough to get him canned.

Sure, but what if the allegations turn out to be false?

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Mike Hayward fired from Pitt 17 days in.

Maybe a bit harsh considering he hasn't been convicted yet?

Race factor? Price was guilty of some shenanigans with a prostitute. This is an odd situation and you would think if the charges turn out to be meritless...that Pitt will look really stupid. Maybe they know more about the case than the media knows.

But I agree, Price shouldn't have been fired either and in the end SI paid through the nose when he sued them for libel and defamation.

Then Pitt has a bit of egg on their face, but it isnt like he was out partying and got a bit trashed he is under suspicion of Domestic Assault, they had to can him. He has no equity with them yet.

Race has nothing to do with this.

Precisely. He's "under suspicion". Not convicted. I wasn't too impressed with the hire on pure football terms, and if he is in fact guilty, by all means throw him out of town as fast as possible, just seems a little quick.

In other news, Randy Edsall is said to be at the top of Maryland's list.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

It's a little more than under suspicion. He's been charged, and there's alleged to be evidence of a physical altercation. At the very least, I think he's guilty of exercising poor judgment.

That having been said, the exact circumstances remain to be seen.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Pitt also tried to spin hiring him over Holgerson (Okla St. OC, new WVU OC/Coach in waiting) as wanting to hire a man of character.

Whoops.

It doesnt matter whether he is convicted, they are absolutely in the right by cutting ties with him right away. It is way too high profile not to.

Now Maryland wants Edsall...Mike Leach may never get a job again.

I could be wrong, but wasn't Price also stupid enough to charge it to a work credit card?

He's suing his former boss and the major source of publicity in his industry (ESPN). That's kind of an issue to administrative types.

I agree that is what I said when everyone here wanted him to coach the Gophers but no one would listen to me. The guy is the Mel Gibson of college football.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Isn't being a football coach considered at will employment? Can't they pretty much be fired for no reason at all like most other people in America?

Other than things like discrimination, and such. It shouldn't matter if he is guilty or not, they are free to fire him.

100%. I'm not saying he has a legal case against them or anything. Just saying, if he was really the guy they wanted, it seems a little odd to jump off at the first point.

Craig, I only said "under suspicion" because that's the way Handy phrased it. I'm aware he's been formally charged.

They used "James-Gate" to get out of paying his buyout. He's suing for his 1.5 million, and then going after ESPN and Craig James for slander, I think.

Yeah, today's been a good kick to the testicles... if UConn's athletic department doesn't want to spend the money then the athletic department gets what they deserve... which I hope means the instant firing of the athletic director. It won't.... but it should.

As for the Pitt situation... most coaches contracts include various morals clauses cloaked in relation to the image of the school. I don't know if Pitt is private, but if they are then they can get away with looser standards.

TCU will automatically improve the Big East 10 fold when they join. Because right now that conference is horrible!

And somehow the conference is 3-2 in bowl games. How is the Big 10 doing?

They made that same argument on TV the other night also as if that somehow cures the fact that the conference winner had 4 losses (now 5) and was in a BCS game they didn't deserve to be in.

Also the games they have won haven't exactly been spectacular opponents (C-USA 5 loss team, Big 12 6 loss team, ACC 7 loss team).

This has nothing to do with the Big Ten being better or worse. This is specifically about how horrible the Big East is.

Agreed. The Big Ten played three Big 12 teams, three SEC teams, and the #3 team in the nation. They were favored in what? One? Two of the games maybe?

So how did the Big 10 do? How did Nebraska do?

If we're going to play this silly game, here's a question for you:

Who would you take in a top to bottom challenge? Big Ten + Nebraska vs. Big East.

I agree the Big Ten at 2-5 (chance to be 3-5 with OSU) didn't have a great bowl season. That still does not make the Big East a better conference.

It's a silly argument to try and make and i'm surprised anyone is bothering with it. Oh wait its the internet, i'm not surprised.
