Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

huh go figure. BYU 33, Nebraska 28.

On a Hail Mary to end the game.

First time Nebraska has lost on opening day for 29 years. First loss for a first time coach since I think the 50's at Lincoln.

Just when you think the game is yours, someone goes and posthumously baptizes it

I don't know what the point spread was or the over/under, but shouldn't BYU have to try the PAT?

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

BYU QB Taysom Hill is out for the year with a broken foot.

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

Some other interesting upsets.

Washington State does their best to make their neighbors at Idaho feel a whole lot better- by getting beat by FCS Portland State 24-17

I'm not sure this is an upset. When WSU is waning they are TERRIBLE, and PSU is one of those programs that sometime forgets they aren't FBS.

I like joe tessatore but not feeling this new college football final with him and joey galloway.

Man. This was an awful week for the Big Ten.
The week isn't over yet. ;) If the Buckeyes can avenge last year's loss to VT, things will look a little better.

Yes, there were some disappointing losses. But Sparty did enough. Northwestern's win over Stanford was an unexpected pleasure. And as you said yourself:

I really don't think Minnesota's offense was as bad as people are making it out to be. TCU has an incredible team put together. I think that the score wasn't deceivingly close. I think Minnesota has a really, really good defense and kept it close.
The Gophers have generally been pretty good in the trenches. Coach Kill has made upgrading the secondary a top priority, and his efforts appear to be paying off. So yes, the MN defense is trending upward.

It's fashionable to say there's no such thing as a moral victory. But playing hard the whole 60 minutes, and keeping the #2 team nervous until the very end? Not a victory, but certainly not an awful performance.

OK, some brand name schools with new head coaches lost prominent games. But let's give the new guys more than 1 week to get things back on track.

But MIKE LEACH- he's brilliant- remember Texas Tech? Still, the air quality in the Palouse must be really killing football in the area. Gotta be the wild fires.

(from a Vandal point of view- getting beat by a MAC team is better than a projected bottom dweller Big Sky team. So there's suck, and really really suck. Then there's football in the Palouse.)

The issue is there was nothing shown to say Leidner improved as a passer, and without Cobb, to an extent, and especially Williams, that's a HUGE question mark the rest of the way. The defense will keep them in every game. Will they have someone who can make a play when they need it most in those games? It doesn't look to be Leidner right now. It's early though.

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

Iowa looked like a refreshingly different and new team yesterday. Yes it was against FCS #2 Illinois State, but for a change the Hawkeyes dominated an opponent like a B1G team should in this game. CJ Beathard has such a strong arm and quick release, and Greg Davis used that extremely well calling plays yesterday. It was refreshing to see Kirk Ferentz's somewhat boring, seemingly historic schemes modernize a little bit. For example, on the 1st and goal from the 5 they ran trips left with a diamond look to the wideouts, and had CJB in shotgun. Finally running the ball from a spread look. Touchdown.

Oh, and we tried a fake FG. We didn't convert it and the fans gave a standing ovation.

These tweets from an Iowa beat writer say it all:

@marcmorehouse: Kinnick crowd cheers failed fake FG. This is like therapy.

@marcmorehouse: The Kinnick reaction to the failed fake FG was tremendous. Sideline reaction, too. Like KF taking first step off the high dive.

Good stuff. Welcome to the 21st Century. ;)

Being slow to innovate has actually been an issue for the conference as a whole. Since... well, always.
