College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

A sad and tragic day for Hawkeye Nation. This one really stinks. Sash was a heck of a community guy and was a great representative of the state of Iowa, a great Iowan.

This is just crazy to me. He was one of my favorite players in the late 00's and he brought as much passion and energy to the field as I've seen of any Hawkeyes in my lifetime. He loved being a Hawkeye, and he loved playing the game. You could just see it.

I still remember a few of his HUGE interceptions in his career like they happened yesterday; he had a knack for making huge plays when they were needed most.

These two are tied for my favorite ones:

'09 Indiana - Pinball INT hits off 5 different players before an 86 yard pick six - Trick or Treat, Iowa City!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOYWmlYm5Xw

'10 Michigan State - Sash INT and lateral to Micah Hyde for a combined pick six: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1c38qRcg1U
A nice road win yesterday for the Hawkeyes to cap off an emotional week in Iowa City. A couple of key injuries to watch though; Drew Ott has something with an elbow and it sounds like it may be minor, but still don't know on starting RB LeShun Daniels and his ankle.

Iowa may actually be a factor in the West simply because of their QB. Finally someone who looks like a playmaking difference maker. He made a some legit pro throws yesterday, and he has only started 3 games. I'm excited for CJ Beathard's future at Iowa.

If the Hawkeyes can take care of Pittsburgh at home Saturday night, they should be 4-0 heading to Madison to take on the Badgers. Will be interesting to see how things go; Kirk Ferentz has only finished the non conference undefeated 2 or 3 times in his tenure at Iowa.

Texas fires AD Steve Patterson less than two years after swiping him from ASU. Patterson will have little sympathy here in the desert, where he had said he wasn't going anywhere shortly before he suddenly left for Texas. Seems like a little bit of what comes around goes around.

It's annoying when they do that but it really happens all the time. New hires always say "it has been my life's one overarching dream to come here to Bumpkin State," but it's also very hard to say 'no' to a raise when your family is whining about wanting to buy more crap they don't need and you already feel guilty because you're spending 23 hours a day breaking down film and/or your secretary's resistance.

My recollection is that Patterson had a specific clause that said he couldn't take the Texas job without the approval of the head guy at ASU, Michael Crow and then Patterson went and pursued the job without Crow knowing until very late in the process, at which time Crow decided it wasn't worth the fight over enforcing a contract provision. Not the end of the world, but not handled well by Patterson. But you are certainly correct that this stuff goes on a lot. It also leaves a bad taste in a lot of fans mouths.

It also leaves a bad taste in a lot of fans mouths.

That's no disincentive, though. The exiting coach is the bad guy so the fans keep rooting for Lily White U. Meanwhile, the coach doesn't drive away any fans from his new school because he just chose them over his prior agreement. The only possible downside would be if the fans were disinclined from their fandom based on their school's willingness to hire mercenaries as coaches, but (a) that's not how fandom works, particularly NCAA fandom, and (b) it's not even certain that fans ought to be turned off by a coach's or school's self-interested behavior. What fans really want is a winning program, and that sort of behavior tends to maximize chances of winning. Even the media and sponsors don't see it as a downside because it create a story that then puts the school in the news leading to more eyeballs and more profit.

The one downside I can think of is if players start avoiding coaches with that rep because of the risk that the staff/system that they are recruited into won't be there all four (or five) years. That might hurt a basketball program, but much less so a football program.

So, I was listening to a radio play on XM Classic Radio and there was a background radio broadcast of a 1929 Georgia Tech football game (the "wrong way Riegels" Rose Bowl) where they were referred to as the "Golden Tornados." I had never heard that as their nickname, but apparently it was.

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

I've seen four targeting calls today. I've also been watching a lot of football today, but that seems like a lot.
