I need to find and rewatch that. At the game it looked so much like a real fumble, so I guess Hogan sold it well.
Also when the award lets people vote at any time during the season, so they can give it to the MVP of LSU-Alabama and ignore any remaining games. Whereas the AP PotY waits until the end and gave it to CMac.
Seriously, the whole point of the show was they were breaking up with their old rival band (Cal) and needed a new rival. They want on to farmersonly.com and found Iowa's, and to them Iowa's seemed fun and they thought they would be a good rival. It was pretty complimentary. Now, they found a way to mention corn nearly every other word and had some cow-tipping going on, but c'mon, that's at worst gentle ribbing. But man, something about it reaaaaally got under the Iowa fans' skin (or maybe the first half put them in a mood). I'd be interested in seeing what MavHockey14 thought.

The whole heisman thing kills me.
Nothing against Henry, as he does run well, but state showed that he could generally be contained even in a blowout.
On the other hand, McAffery does it all- catch, run, receive. Plan one thing, he'll do another. That's why he's the better player. I'm sure he'd throw the ball, if needed.
His all purpose record is way more impressive than a single one, imho.
Anyway, heck of a game.

For comparison, I'll mention I've seen the Wisconsin Band in person several times. They certainly incorporate irreverence into their shows and I've never had any problem with them. Could be I'd draw the same conclusion about the Stanford band.
And yet... The UW Band is traditionally attired, which suggests a basic respect for the proceedings. That should be the case for any official University function. Should a debate team show up for a competition dressed up as the Village People? Or if presenting a paper at an academic conference, would a clown suit be appropriate attire?
I'd certainly agree that the university life should be open to more irreverence, and be more free-spirited than say, the business world. That's particularly true when it comes to hijinks occurring entirely within the confines of one's own student body. But at the same time, at a public event involving more than one school, a somewhat less lenient standard may apply.
Still, as to whether a line was crossed in this case, I'll defer to those personally present.
There is a difference between playful parody and mocking the entire event. I'd also be very interested in MavHockey14's take; to pass judgment on a band's performance you really have to be personally present at the stadium. Can't really tell from the few snippets you get on TV.

But what is appropriate attire for the marching band at a football game? The attire (or perhaps, more accurately that lack of it, not that I'm objecting
) of the cheer squads certainly wouldn't be appropriate at a debate competition, and the audience at most academic conferences doesn't arrive bare chested with body paint in the school colors.
The Stanford band wasn't dressed conventionally, but to the extent that I paid attention had at least a common theme, and their routine, while also unconventional, appeared planned and rehearsed. It didn't appear to be just a random assortment of musicians.
I wouldn't want every college band to be dressed like them and and have routines like them, but there's a certain sameness and pomposity to marching bands and I find them a little refreshing.
The satire wasn't aimed at any disadvantaged group, and didn't offend my sense of taste. But then the satire wasn't aimed at me, and some things bother me that don't bother other reasonable people.

But I still believe that as a general principle, there is an important difference between playful parody and mocking. If year after year significant numbers of fans believe they (or the event) are being mocked, then the question is worth asking. At the very least, the leaders of the University involved should be asking themselves if this is really how they want their school to be represented to the outside world.
If the answer to that question is yes, then OK: Let Stanford be Stanford, and let the chips fall where they may. Their call. But if Ohio State were to stage a halftime show of that nature, I'd be disappointed.
Taking my post as a whole, not just the quoted part, I think it's clear that I'm basically asking the same question, not insisting on a particular answer. Trying to set specific standards in advance is probably hopeless.
