College Football 2009: Where Championships are won by a majority vote

Re: College Football 2009: Where Championships are won by a majority vote

If all the football schools get together in 4-5 conferences, they can tell the NCAA to stuff it. What need would they have for the NCAA? They can leave the NCAA, police themselves (yeah right) and make their own TV deals.

My impression is this has effectively already happened. I can't think of why the factory schools would not always keep the NCAA fig leaf of "student" athleticism.

Uhhh...money?

Re: College Football 2009: Where Championships are won by a majority vote

What's the upside to leaving the NC$$? It exists to generate revenue for the 30 or 40 biggest schools already.

The revenue from the hoops tournament is split among 300+ schools. By withdrawing from the NCAA, that money will only be split among the conference schools. Why would Florida want to help Utah State?

CBS likes to say they're covering the Big Dance for all the Cinderellas, but let's face it: They are there (and the TV numbers back them up) for Goliath, not David.

Assume Nebraska & Missouri to the B10. Invite ISU, which puts the B10 at 14 and they can give a desperate Notre Dame the old raspberry. :) ;)

Cue Handy going off on a Spaceballs tangent. :D :p

Only one conference would dare give me the raspberry...

And Kepler money divided amongst 70 schools is more per school than money divided amongst <70 schools...that is the incentive. No more wasted bowl spots on Utah State or Boise State, no more worrying about whether some upset in the MAAC Tourny will screw a team out of March Madness, now there is no Haves and Have Nots, the Haves control everything. Not to mention no more need to pretend to be amateurs and follow the NCAA rules.

Game, set match the NCAA bends over and grabs its ankles.

This expansion is driven by football and since that sport is already so decoupled from the NCAA (save for the shoddy police job the organization is supposed to carry out), I can't see the super conferences ditching an administrative structure for basketball and the lesser sports that don't make money.

And the mid majors are screwed unless Orrin Hatch and Congress really try and drop the hammer.

To re-examine a previous post:

Pacific-16

Arizona
Arizona State
Colorado
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech

California
Oregon
Oregon State
Stanford
UCLA
USC
Washington
Washington State

Big ?

Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Nebraska
Northwestern
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue
Wisconsin

They have enough for two divisions, but they can go to 14 or 16 if they want.

Unaffiliated:
Baylor
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri
Notre Dame (Ind. in football only)

The Big ? can take those bottom four schools and expand to 16. ISU and Baylor would be left to hope a smaller conference would let them in.

Re: College Football 2009: Where Championships are won by a majority vote

Missouri is assumed to go if Nebraska does to the Big Ten. Notre Dame is the wildcard for them to get to 14.

Hopefully they'll take the two Kansas schools too. They don't fit anywhere else, and it'd be a real shame to lose their basketball programs. Indiana and Kansas in the same hoops conference? Those games would be insane.
