College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Has anyone come up with a prediction or way that Boise State could somehow make the BCS? (barring upsets)

The obvious one is TCU laying an egg against New Mexico, and Boise winning out.

Other than that, Boise's best shot needs these things to happen:
Oregon beats Oregon State
Georgia Tech beats Clemson
Cincinnati beats Pittsburgh and Illinois
TCU beats New Mexico
Texas A&M beats Texas
Texas beats Nebraska

They want to be competing in an at-large pool that includes poor travelers Pittsburgh and weak record Virginia Tech, and that does not include Georgia Tech or Oregon (since only one of Iowa or Penn State can be chosen), and the Fiesta getting Texas, which reduces the financial pressure to take a good traveling team from the East.

This gives us a bowl lineup looking like this:
NCG: SEC winner vs. Cincinnati/TCU (80/20)
Rose: Ohio State vs. Oregon
Sugar: SEC loser vs. Cincinnati (if TCU gets the NCG)/Penn State/Iowa
Orange: Georgia Tech vs. TCU (if Cincy gets the NCG, since Cincy played there last year)/Penn State/Iowa
Fiesta: Texas vs. Boise State

In that scenario, the Orange Bowl might take Virginia Tech or Miami and leave TCU for the Fiesta Bowl. It would be boring as hell for the fans, but it would make money. It'd be nice to think Boise State and TCU have both earned BC$ bids (assuming they both go undefeated) but there is a dollar sign there for a reason...

Eh, I'm not so sure (A) they'd take an ACC-ACC matchup, or (B) that either one of them will end up eligible for an at-large bid (remember you have to be #14 or higher, with 9 wins, for that to happen, and VaTech is just barely on the outside of that at #14...tank it against UVA and that goes bye-bye, though).

I'm always reluctant to blame situations like this entirely on Title IX. It has its problems, but its also an easy scapegoat for administrators to avoid responsibility.

And as Pirate said, football teams in particular cost a lot of money relative to almost all other sports. In most lower division programs (and even a lot of FBS ones) they do not pay for themselves. I would argue that football teams disproportionatley benefit (vis a vis all other male sports save basketball) at lower division schools because they're precieved as being important to a university, regardless of the actual cost or interest from the student body.
True, only at the big schools does football really pay for itself, and only at the Mega schools does the athletic department run in the black. But even with all that, Football hands down will generate more potential donors for a school than any other activity on campus. Athletes tend to give back to their schools at a higher clip than the general student body. And Football usually graduates around 12 seniors a year. You couple that in with members of the Marching Band, Cheer squads, Dance teams and any other game day spirit groups the particular school might have, you would have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 25 freshly minted alumni that a school would then be looking at to become fairly generous donors in the future. If you're a small school like say, Michigan Tech, thats going to be a pretty good sized chunk of where your future donors come from.

If you're looking for laughs and want to see how to run an awful PR campaign, might I suggest to you reading the official Twitter site of the BCS?

Laughably horrible and folks are killing it.

Man, I almost wanna sign up for Twitter just so I could post the word Playoffs there every hour on the hour there. :D

So I'm guessing Michigan State Football players putting people in the hospital is going to be a yearly thing now. [link]

Witnesses and students involved in the incident said a group of 15 to 20 men, who some described as MSU football players, stormed into the dormitory and hit and injured about seven students, some of them women.

Brent Mitchell, a communication junior who said he was sent to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital after being punched in the face, said some of the men wore ski masks, but others were recognized as football team members.

“I walked up and said, ‘It isn’t worth it.’ A guy with dreadlocks hit me and in the scuffle slapped, hit females to get them out of the way,” Mitchell said.

And speaking of stupid people

In the wake of the untimely death of the University of Georgia's (UGA) bulldog mascot, Uga VII, PETA has asked the school's athletic director, Damon M. Evans, to replace the mascot with an animatronic dog--or to rely solely on a costumed mascot--instead of using another real bulldog. Bulldogs are prone to breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, heart disorders, and other congenital ailments, and acquiring a dog from a breeder perpetuates the animal overpopulation crisis while causing another dog waiting in an animal shelter to be condemned to death.

"It is time for the university to put an end to the cycle of suffering endured by dogs who are brought into the world solely to represent the school's 'brand'," says PETA Assistant Director Kristie Phelps. "By choosing a humane alternative to the use of live animals as school mascots, UGA can show that compassion always wins."

Does this make any sense to anybody.

Yikes.

There are several published, but as of yet, unconfirmed reports that Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen was attacked outside a South Bend establishment late Saturday or early Sunday.

NewsCenter 16 has learned that the assault against Clausen was unprovoked.

It is believed Clausen may have been with his parents just before or when the incident occurred.

WGN 720 in Chicago first broke the story, saying Clausen was "sucker-punched" outside of CJ's Pub after Saturday night's loss to UConn.

ESPN's Joe Schad reports that Clausen was hit by an "irate fan".

According to multiple outlets, no police report has been made as of yet.
