You’d be surprised at the popularity of college track and its importance in developing world class athletes not just for the US.

Not surprising. The best D-1 track programs look like the United Nations and I don't think they're here to study engineering.

Every MAC school is going to try to drop to the minimum of 16 programs. Probably almost every G5 program outside of the half dozen with delusions of getting into a Power 5 league.

"G5"?

Are those the D-1 mid majors?

Group of 5.

In FBS, there are the Power 5 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC) and the Group of 5 conferences (AAC, CUSA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt).

P5 and G5 names are officially used for the college football playoff tie-ins and the mid-major bid to the New Years Six games.

Power 6 is catching on a little in the basketball world, with the Big East joining the other Power 5 conferences, but it really only has meaning in football. I think P5 may also mean something when it comes to voting at NCAA meetings, but I can’t recall.

Just call it the Haves, the Have Littles, and then everyone else is the Have Nots.

Central Michigan cuts men's track and field.

Track must be a lot more expensive than I think to run because it always seems to be one of the first ones on the chopping block even though on its face it looks extremely cheap. They're keeping women's track and both men's and women's cross country. All of those teams share the same coaching staff, so theoretically everyone still has a job, though I'm sure some consolidation will happen. Since you still get five scholarships with just a XC team, they're basically just cutting 7.6 scholarships with this move and whatever associated travel costs, but even those seem low. It looks like they take a few long trips each year, but other than that with the number of interdivisional meets and the number of D2 schools in Michigan, everything is within 4-5 hour drive.

Also, looks like I missed a couple earlier, Old Dominion dropped wrestling, Cincy dropped men's soccer and FIU dropped men's indoor track.

It’s not so much that the sport is itself expensive to run, it’s that the expense is scholarship-heavy. It’s otherwise a fairly low maintenance sport. But unless you’re in the Ivy/Patriot class of schools who can recruit on the strength of your academics, getting competitive athletes in the absence of scholarships is untenable.

And even for Directional State U, slicing off just a half dozen scholarships gets you six figure savings per year.

The move today takes CMU down to five men’s sports when the minimum is six, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens. Presumably any waivers would be temporary so unless there is a permanent change they’ll have to make some type of addition in the future.

Apparently Chicago St was set to drop baseball as well, but when realizing they’d be in the same situation they’ve decided to delay the decision.

Hope this isn’t a sign to come... UAH is dropping hockey. Effective immediately.

I would have to think they stand or fall together, right?

With their entire state budget in shambles, they’re in a unique situation compared to other schools. I believe one of the solutions to their budget problem is merging campuses/athletic departments. It’s possible both programs fold and a new, third program rises, or since Fairbanks is the flagship their history may be the successor for any combined team in that situation.

But Jim probably has better insight into that.

The smart thing would be to fold all athletics at UAF and keep most stuff at UAA. UAF sucks hardcore at all sports not named hockey or riflery and trying to keep sports in a tiny market like Fairbanks is a recipe for disaster.

But this is the UA system so they’ll do something stupid.

The one thing to note is that UAA is already at the minimum of sports so who knows.

I look forward to seeing the UA-Fairchorage NanWolves in action.

The midpoint is Cantwell. Merge them and move them there.

Tell me about Cantwell. I'll bet it's hoppin'.

(Looks.)

Oh holy f-ck, Igloo City! Let's roll!

So Michigan President Mark Schlissel has come out and said the elephant in the room- no students = no sports https://www.freep.com/story/sports/...sident-mark-schlissel-coronavirus/5252621002/

Which makes sense, since the athletes are students, not professionals. So they should not be forced to go back w/o other students.

Although, if there are students on campus, Harbaugh is ok playing in front of nobody.

(Get Up this morning also mentioned he pointed out that college football is a small part of the university, less than 10%, and the university would be fine w/o sports for a year- but I can't find a quote. I thought that was interesting because it's been posted many more than once that all sports, including football, is a small part of a University's budget. And for most, it's completely independently funded. So university presidents need to focus on the big picture, not football)
