College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

It seems to me that we haven't erased the line between the haves and the have-nots in college football. We've just arbitrarily shifted it a little bit.

That shipped sailed long ago. Any one of USC, Notre Dame or Michigan has a football budget that's probably larger than entire mid-major conferences. Football will be dominated by factory schools until the NFL has an overtly professional developmental system -- something that will likely never happen.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Compared to the Stanford program that went to the Rose Bowl in 2000, and has beaten USC last season and Oregon last week, among other big wins?

And is #25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

No one is going to play them, or Boise State. And I used the SEC as an example because apparently scheduling games @Virginia and @Clemson wasn't good enough.

Apparently you missed where I noted that the Pac has played Boise State every season, for at least seven years running. ;)

That said, this season shows that even a big win against a very good Oregon team in nonconference play doesn't make up for a weak conference slate for Boise State. Less of a problem for TCU, as their conference is a bit better.

I wonder if Boise State could ever switch to the WAC? That'd make the WAC even better, probably at least in the same neighborhood as a conference like the Big East or ACC, and in a good year maybe better.

Ummmm.....

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

You know he meant the Mountain West. ;)

You betcha!

Speaking of the WAC, is Louisiana Tech the most out of place team in any conference? The closest team to them in their conference is in New Mexico, and most are a lot further than that! Louisiana Tech playing Hawaii has to be about the longest distance conference matchup around.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Toby Gerhart is tied for second in the nation with 16 TDs and second with 1217 rushing yards. Too bad he's not the QB for Florida or Texas and thus ineligible for the Heisman.

Nov 9 BCS

Iowa drops to 10, two 3-loss teams in the top 25.

Interesting. Cincy seems to be getting the brunt of pollster "disrespect" (I hate that word, but it seems to fit here). They still have the WVU and Pitt games. If they get through those and their poll standing doesn't move up to match their computer ranking, I think they'll have a legit complaint.

The guy is a load and should get serious consideration. But won't.

And to boot, the guy very good player for Stanford's baseball team. Really, one of the better multisport college players in awhile.

Since theres a good chance the Big 12 North spits out an 8-4(or 7-5!) champion, its unlikely Texas's resume will be superior to Cinci's. That said there is no chance the Bearcats get in without somebody slipping up. What would be interesting is if Florida or Bama stub their toe, but then win the SEC title, do they still get to the title game over a 12-0 Big East champ?

And he could be back next year since he had to medical redshirt a year. Of course, that depends on how he's looking for next year's draft and how he's doing in baseball in the spring.

So he's the new Tommy Vardell then? Well hey, at least you know he'll end up in Detroit stealing touchdowns from someone else.

Heh, he was at the game yesterday being inducted into the Stanford Hall of Fame. He held the career rushing record at Stanford and Gerhart could come close to topping that just this year. "Touchdown Toby"!

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Oregon State and VaTech? Really? Completely ignorant.

Oregon State is interesting, as the computers love them, at #18, while the voters don't, at #28.

Really, I'm not sure anyone has a huge argument that they should be ahead of these teams. And in the pantheon of college football injustices, this'd be way down the list.

I doubt it. Especially for Florida. The Gator fans I know have no illusions about their schedule - it's undefeated or bust. But I don't see them losing. FSU is at Gainesville, and while anything can happen in rivalry games, does anyone really think the 'noles have a shot? Best chance for an upset is probably the South Carolina game next week.

Alabama has a little bit stronger case. If they lose at Auburn but defeat Florida, they're clearly going to be the top 1-loss team. But even then I'd say it's probably not enough. Definitely not enough for the computer rankings. It's the human voters who'll be the wildcard.

Their losses are all against good teams though - Cincinnati, USC, and Arizona - and a win over Stanford, so they definitely deserve a spot somewhere in the top 25.

And it doesn't really matter, as the computers only look at results and not at potential. As the remainder of the season unfolds, they'll get a more complete picture of Oregon State. They play Washington and Washington State, both of which should bring down the SOS a couple notches, and then finish with Oregon.

It's also worth noting that in Jeff Sagarin's rankings, Oregon State does much worse in the one that uses scores (not the one used by the BCS). Take out MoV, and they're 13th. Add it in, and they're 28th.
