College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Florida-Gulf Coast is up by 14 with under 6 to go. I know the 15 seed is a cute story, but I don't think I like the way they carry themselves.

I think Mr. Donovan and the Gators will settle their hash.

UCLA just announced that they have fired Ben Howland.

We probably never had a legitimate chance at Tyus. Most people, including the Gopher insiders, have said he's going to MSU.

Also, why would that exclude Tyus from coming here? Was he really that tied to Tubby?

Well, there's little time now to develop a relationship as he'll probably decide somewhat soon now that his season is over. Don't think they had a legit shot, but you never know.

Minny should go after the Florida Gulf Coast coach.

I mentioned to wife the other night that the coach and his model wife will be the biggest winners of the tournament...somebody will offer him big $$ to move and he'll either be gone or the owner of a new extension and raise. Pitt's coach lost by 50 and got a 10 year extension. Using that metric, the FGCU coach will get a 1,000 year contract that gives him a new model wife every 5 years.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Quite a change in atmosphere from living on the beach to MN, though.

Shaka Smart turned down big cash at Illinois, no chance he leaves.

It's an overrated job with crappy facilities in the best conference in basketball.
The talk on the sports radio I've heard today is that most believe that Teague already has contacted Shaka, and that he wouldn't have fired Tubby if he didn't think he already all but had a verbal agreement in place... I don't buy it, but props to the AD if that is true.

If that's true, kudos. To think Shaka wouldn't leave VCU for Illinois, a much better position than Minnesota, is absurd. IMHO.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Not really.
Why? Due to him knowing Teague?

Tubby brought Minnesota basketball back to relevancy, won 20 games 5 of 6 seasons, with an old arena and no progress on the practice facility he was promised when he took the job in 2007. IMHO, there isn't a big enough investment in the program to truly develop into a perennial Big Ten power. Minnesota has't been awful, and it's not easy to recruit well when your facilities are subpar.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

It's just not absurd. It's certainly possible. In fact, I'd give it a higher than 25% chance we get Shaka.
