Colgate and Starr's last season

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Hamilton's numbers were better than Finn's last year, but only five games I think with a shutout. I was really impressed with him last year.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I am very disappointed. Colgate struggles to beat top-20 teams yet we give it away to a very young Mercyhurst team for the second year in a row. Do not understand why Finn did not start. If he is your go-to-guy, he should play every game because each one has postseason implications, even this early in the season. There is only 1 game next weekend, so rest isn't an issue. Starting Hamilton gave the wrong impression and it backfired. Makes me wish we had an exhibition weekend like everyone else...unless you're BC! With our questionable defense, it could be an unsettling season with roller-coaster ups and downs, but hope we wind up on top.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I don't know if I have been more worried about a season after the first weekend. Obviously it is early and the team hasn't had much time to jell, but 8 goals (not counting the empty net) is disturbing. I didn't see the actual game, listened to GR, but seemed like Finn played fairly well stopping a number of breakaways (or at least odd man rushes). However four goals in 35 min is too many. On the other hand this could be an exciting team to watch even if not successful, seems like we have an insane offense.

As I said I know it's early but do you think Vaughn tries to put lough and kulivich on the same line to try and form a shut down pair, or continues to try and spread the experience on the D throughout the lines

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Like I said before, the start of this season is not unlike the start of both the 2009-10 and 2013-14 seasons, where we lost at least 3 regular defensemen from the previous campaign(s).

In 2009-10, we had two 4-4 ties (both against Atlantic hockey teams Army and Niagara), and a 5-3 loss to UMass-Lowell, who was a preseason top 20 that year.

In 2013-14, we split our opening series to Ferris State (also the first weekend of October, when other teams were playing exhibitions), and in the game we lost, we gave up 7 goals. We then gave up 7 goals to Bowling Green in mid-October, and again gave up 7 goals to Quinnipiac at home in November. This was then followed by a game against RPI where we gave up 6 goals on 14 shots, also in November. I still don't get how we made the NCAA's that year with 20 total wins, yet last year we won 22 and just missed the tournament.

Still, I expect we will see some growing pains throughout October and November. As far as D-pairs go, I would expect Lough, Corkey, and Kulevich to remain on separate lines for now. Perhaps once Anthony Sanniti has seen more regular playing time (he got some last year when Goulakos was hurt), he will be paired with one of the frosh, and we'll see 2 of Lough, Corkey, and Kulevich as a shut-down pair.

In other news -- Kyle Baun and Chris Wagner have both made the opening night rosters for the Blackhawks and Ducks, respectively.

Baun and Colgate have been mentioned a couple of times by Pierre McGuire during tonight's opening game between Black Hawks and Rangers.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Kyle got 12 shifts and over 9 minutes on the ice - pretty good for his first game in the NHL and right out of college. Still....wish he had stayed in Hamilton :(

Kyle made his NHL debut last spring and played in Chicago's final three regular season games.

Friday, November 27th at 4pm...we may get to see Kyle vs. Chris....Go 'gate!

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

It's game-day again, we head to Boston to face what should be a solid Hockey East opponent. NE will be definitely looking for some revenge after we shutout them out at Starr last year over two games. I don't want to say we need this game as it is only our third game but it certainly would be nice to get this one on the road after sunday. A tie would also not hurt us but if we get trounced by a lot of goals it could be a scary season for our defense. Also, I believe NE has a free stream if people are looking to watch it.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Oh, snap! I just realized we're playing in Boston tonight! I'll be at the game. It's so nice to get my first look at this team so early in the season.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Your Mr.Finn has lost nothing off his game. The kid was enormous tonight. See you in Belfast.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

NU "stream" was horrible....thanks 'GateRadio for another great call...Finn kept us in it...it is going to be a long season...lots of highs and lots of lows.....

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

The stream was ok but typical homer announcers, the norm for college productions . The game was hard to watch, we had no sustained offense, Gate was outshot badly but not too many quality chances by NU. Finn played very well or the score easily was worse.

We did have two breakaways(no goals) two pipes, and a good goal called off in the third that would have put us up 2-1. The ref lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle as we scored. Tough to watch.

The announcers didn't tell you who had the puck most of the time in our own zone and I couldn't make out the numbers so I still can't comment on our young defensemen. I do know the puck was in our end too long too many times. We were sloppy.

I guess this is what we can expect with our growing pains, it's going to be tough for awhile.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Thank goodness for the bye week. Maybe we can straighten out a few things before the RIT and Providence games. The frosh will benefit the most from practice, practice, practice.....

Going against Providence 1-4 or 2-3 won't do much for our confidence. Hopefully we get two Ws vs RIT. :)

Fixed your post Shabby. The goal that was waived off was on the power play too. Borkowski took a shot from in between the face-off circles, Roy made the save, then Murphy was there to "pickpocket" the puck from his pads and bury it into the net. But the ref called the play dead almost immediately after Roy made the save. Grrrr.

So we score 7 goals in a game but lose, then only allow 2 goals the next game but also lose. I hate when this happens, because you get this feeling that you have to play a "perfect game" in order to win. But this was a good early season test for us, even if we ended up on the short end of the ouctome. NU had a large student turnout (it was their season opener), and most of them were behind Finn for the 1st and 3rd periods. The place was loud and I almost felt like I was at Lynah for a bit  Matthews Arena is a great place to watch hockey. When I walked into the building, I felt like I was walking into a hotel lobby!

Anyways, we're on to RIT. Don't like having an in-season bye week but maybe it'll help us regroup a bit.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Rainman, what can you tell us about our frosh defensemen and Racine our forward ?
