Colgate 23-24

Good-luck (and good-skill) to Colgate this weekend at home against Mercyhurst. If anyone watches the games, please post your thoughts here (as I will be following the men to Fairfield, Conn.). It appears that we are still #3 in the Poll and #7 in PWR. Thanks!

On the former Gate player front, both Katie Chan and Sammy Smigs are playing well for Cornell and BC respectively. Just Noticed KC who is on Cornell's first line scored their first 2 goals of the season tonight against PSU for a 2-1 lead late in the 1st. Go Raiders past, present and future...

It looks like all the ranked (or higher-ranked) teams won tonight, except Northeastern… and not by one goal margins. Wisconsin 9-0. Colgate 7-0. Wow!

I thought we got a great result from a good performance tonight. We lucked out playing against a goalie who had a game to forget and other than a great spurt at the beginning of the first period I didn't see consistent energy. I thought K Osborne was our top player. She's having a great year. Also fun to see Holt (the new Rosie Demers) and Pickering score, I like their games. I will say our PP so far this year has been otherworldly. Hopefully tomorrow we can play another statement game so people know we are for real and have the focus to take it all the way.

A solid game tonight by the Colgate women. Seven goals on 45 shots! Good to see scoring spread among five skaters. I enjoyed the agressiveness around the goal – with several short range goals, some on rebounds.

And great to see the Pep Band support the women's hockey team for the third consecutive Friday evening.

Pais looked very good. She's on the top line so you know Coach wants her there but DS controls the majority of the play on that line and Pais is learning how to play with her like O'Donohoe and Grieg did the last two years. On any other line Pais would have more puck time and control. I've watched her for the last year plus on the Canadian teams and she can play with anyone. She will be a star.

I am really enjoying women's college hockey this season. Last weekend, while at Sacred Heart for the Colgate men's contests, I took in LIU 3 at Sacred Heart 1 on Friday afternoon, and BC 2 at UConn 1 on Saturday afternoon. Tonight, I watched RIT 1 at Saint Lawrence 2 on ESPN+ PPV.
Looking at Colgate, it appears that they are #3 (behind Wisconsin and Ohio State) in the USCHO poll and #2 (behind Minnesota) in the NCAA PairWise Ranking (PWR) entering the bye weekend. They play next weekend at RPI and Union. Go 'Gate.

Good-luck (and good-skill) to Colgate this weekend on the road at RPI on Friday and Union on Saturday. If anyone watches the games, please post your thoughts here (as I will be heading to the Minnesota - Duluth at Cornell men's games this weekend). It appears that the Colgate women are #3 in the Poll (behind Wisconsin and Ohio State) and #1 in PWR (ahead of Clarkson, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin). Interesting!

Things about to get tougher for Colgate with Cornell, Qpac, SLU, & Clarkson off to impressive starts. We were outshot the last period against Brown, 13-3, they scored twice, and we took 2 (?) penalties. Penalties and SOG has always been a concern, and our gaa is only 10th. UMD not far off in the horizon but one game at a time! Go ‘Gate, beat Dartmouth!

Fun team to watch. I had the chance to see both games this weekend. They let Brown hang around too long. Got it really going against Yale.

I thought the Yale game perfectly showcased this team's greatest strength...nonstop assault. They're always swarming, aggressively defending, constantly forechecking, not letting their opponents breathe. When we get it going it seems like an end in itself and if we happen to score, great, but that's only part of the process of attempting to impose our will. Real speed and over confidence are the two things I feel we have to occasionally worry about. We saw the speed with Wisconsin last spring but it's a rare team that's faster than Gate. So that leaves overconfidence where we take too many chances. After watching the last 10 years of Gate women's hockey under Coach Fargo I think that's simply part of our "we skate free" identity and he's willing to risk it when he has the players he wants on the ice...

Yes, Colgate smothered Yale on Saturday. That was for sure an impressive showing. 'Gate prevented us from completing passes much, and it looked like they were also playing more different lines.

I have watched women's college hockey for years, including Colgate, but this year is the first one where I am really appreciating and enjoying the sport. But even this early in the season, I have one over-riding question... why does there seem to be so few upsets?
Using the current PairWise Ranking (PWR) and last weekend's results for the 'top 15' in PWR, here is what I found...

#1 Colgate beat #24 Brown.
#2 Ohio State beat #34 Bemidji State.
#3 Wisconsin beat #11 Saint Cloud State.
#4 Clarkson beat #27 Union.
#5 Cornell beat #14t Yale.
#6 Minnesota beat #29 Minnesota State Mankato.
#7 Saint Lawrence beat @22 RPI.
#8 Minnesota Duluth beat #18 Saint Thomas.
#28 Holy Cross **UPSET** #9 Vermont.
#10 Quinnipiac beat #35 Dartmouth.
#12t UConn beat #19 Northeastern.
#12t Mercyhurst beat #21 RIT.
#33 Maine **UPSET** #14t BC.

#1 Colgate beat #14t Yale.
#2 Ohio State beat #34 Bemidji State.
#3 Wisconsin beat #11 Saint Cloud State.
#4 Clarkson beat #22 RPI.
#5 Cornell beat #24 Brown.
#6 Minnesota beat #29 Minnesota State Mankato.
#7 Saint Lawrence beat #27 Union.
#8 Minnesota Duluth beat #18 Saint Thomas.
#10 Quinnipiac beat #39 Harvard.
#12t UConn beat #19 Northeastern.
#21 #21 RIT **UPSET** #12t Mercyhurst.
#14t BC beat #33 Maine.

So, 25 games in two nights, resulting in just three upsets.
And if I looked at just the 'top ten' teams in PWR, there would be just one upset in 19 games.
Why is there such a disparity between the top and the bottom of just 44 NCAA WIH programs?
Thanks!

Patience...the upsets are coming.
