Colgate 2026-27

Colgate Zach just reminded me...
The Class of 1965 Arena has a new wall of posed team photos of the past men's and women's hockey teams.
It is really well done and very classy. I will take some photos tonight; let me know if you want a photo from a particular year.

Also, last night, the pep band was in the house... as were cheerleaders (mind you, there wasn't a ton about which to cheer).

Well, that was a first… I inadvertently left my phone at home and didn’t realize it until I was north of Whitney Point.

My positive takeaway from tonight’s loss to New Hampshire at home is actually a positive in all of our opening four losses this season… I don’t think that Colgate has taken a single ‘too many players on the ice’ penalty yet this year!! That’s it. That’s my positive.

New Hampshire 32, Colgate 15, final SOG.
New Hampshire 2, Colgate 0, final score.
Kudos to Reid Dyck (again).

I wouldn't hold your breathe waiting for this team to get measurably better...some improvement yes, but this isn't the kids fault...you can only ride on a previous coach's cocktails for 2-3 years...we're in a new reality now for better or worse...

Musings on a Sunday morning - Women’s hockey was the ONLY ‘Gate team (football, men’s hockey, women’s soccer, volleyball and field hockey) to come away with Ws over Homecoming Weekend. It’s early days, for sure, for both hockey squads - but the women are fun to watch! Go ‘gate!!

I guess GreenCoat is subtly trying to tell me NOT to expect to see Colgate at the Frozen Four in D.C. this April. Dang!

I just looked to see when the last time we lost four consecutive games was, thinking it was quite a while ago. I guess I forgot that last season we lost to Maine, RIT, RIT and Dartmouth. And we followed those losses up with a fifth one at Harvard. I am thankful that my brain just naturally tries to forget previous pain.

So exactly where are we on Shots On Goal (SOG) this season?

Stonehill 31, Colgate 23.
Stonehill 30, Colgate 23.
New Hampshire 32, Colgate 19.
New Hampshire 32, Colgate 15.

I figure that we should have at least ten shots and at least one goal... per period. We are getting worse in that department.
On the flip side, give Reid Dyck credit. 11 Goals Against (GA) in 4 games, as two of Colgate's GA were Empty Net Goals (ENG).

Well, thankfully, our next two games are just against Maine... at Alfond in Orono.
Yikes!

IBT, if we end up in the Frozen Four I will be playing in every Power Ball lottery in this nation...after the anger comes disappointment, then resignation...I DO want to be hopeful, believe it or not...next year will be my 50th in the Silver Puck Council...year #1 we were 5-22-1 when Higgins (thankfully) left Hamilton to go to Princeton and Terry, inheriting a s*** show, made us a top ten team by 80-81...and from 1978-79 through 2005-06 Colgate had a very solid men's hockey program...with a few moments notwithstanding it's been a challenging last two decades...

Last Saturday was our first regular season shutout loss in almost 4 years.
Last Saturday was the Colgate football team's first ever home loss to Georgetown.

In the 20+ years I've followed Colgate men's ice hockey I don't think I've ever seen the team start 0-4. I wonder if the OT loss to Stonehill to start the season was a confidence-buster.

Rainman, you got me looking…

In 2001-02, we lost to Nebraska - Omaha, Nebraska - Omaha, Minnesota and Minnesota in our first four games of the season. The losses to Minnesota, on the road, were particularly bad… 8-0 and 9-0.

The shots tell most of it. Over the four games, Colgate's been outshot 125-80, including 64-34 by UNH last weekend, and they're 0 for 13 on the power play. Dyck has kept it closer than it could be (.911). Saturday's 2-0 had an empty-netter, so it was a one-goal game most of the night. Two at Maine this weekend won't be easy, but a power-play goal or two would change a lot of these results.

Reid Dyck led Colgate out onto the ice for tonight’s pregame warmup at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
Petter Wickstrom Stumer did the same for host Maine.

Maine penalty (boarding). 9-3 Maine SOG going in. Killed.
Colgate penalty (interference). Killed.
Colgate penalty (roughing).

Maine PPG. Maine 12-5 SOG (unofficial).

Maine 14, Colgate 12, SOG after one.
Maine 1, Colgate 0, score after one.

Dick was screened and Maine scored. 16-12 Maine SOG.

Maine penalty (interference).
Colgate penalty (elbowing).
Penalties killed.

Maine penalty (holding).
Colgate penalty (embellishment).
Penalties killed.
Maine penalty (holding the stick). Killed.

Maine penalty (hooking).
Maine penalty (Too Many Men).
Penalties killed.

Maine 21, Colgate 15, SOG after two.
Maine 2, Colgate 0, score after two.

Maine penalty (tripping). Killed.

Maine with a beauty. 3-0.

Reid Dyck pulled with 4:28 remaining.
3:30 remaining.

Maine 37, Colgate 24, SOG final.
Maine 3, Colgate 0, score final.

Sorry to see this for the players and the program. The Coach, maybe not so much. Tough to be an outstanding school with a nice arena and this is the best we can muster with an alum at the helm. Just how does one recruit when your record is what it is? Clips of games across the country on Instagram with full stands, what a dream. We may surpass our longest losing streak at the beginning of a season, but I have no intention of digging up that statistic!

Wel, we can start with the good news (which shouldn't take long)...A good effort throughout most of the first and second periods, even down 2-0...then came the 5-3 PP for us, which had the positive effect of sending me to my bedroom to read Bill James...5 goals in 5 games, no goals in 150 minutes...yet Army beats Q-Pac, Robert Morris beats Penn State, etc. I did some further research to support my analysis of this team: in three full years of recruiting by our coach and his staff we have ONE forward who seems to have legit DI skating/stick skills (Ohman)...the other good forwards (and they number only 2 or 3) were recruited by DV...we seemed to be enthralled by anyone who is 6'2" or taller when in fact any DI aspirant who is quite tall AND talented will be playing for Michigan, BC, BU, Denver, West Mich, etc. In toto our forwards are not fast and lack any finishing touch...the kids try, don't get me wrong...but we would appear at this point to be a mish mash of forwards with limited talent...again, NO DISRESPECT to our athletes (the fault lies with the coaching staff)...I pray we get incrementally better as the season progresses, but this program now appears headed in the wrong direction...

Need help from TeacherBill and GreenCoat…

Here is 1992-93…

Tell me the teams that we lost to opening that season, but only the ones that were D-1 and not exhibition games. I assume Toronto and York were exhibitions, but am confused by Plattsburgh State. Thanks!

IBT...I remember that season well as it was DV's first one as head coach...finally got a win and I think we finished 13-18-3 (something like that), up to 14-17-something, then '94-'95 where we beat a very good Vermont team (next year VT would lose in ot in the NCAA semi-finals and featured Martin St. Louis, Eric Perrin and Tim Thomas) after losing game #1 in 2 out of 3 in the quarters...ironically Mike Harder was the star of that team, but, and here is the point, had a good supporting cast around him. I think all three teams counted in the regular season...

GreenCoat… you are right (again)!!
They were 13-18-3, which means York, Toronto and Plattsburgh State were all official games in 1992-93.
It also means that we lost six, tied one and won one in our first eight games of the season.
Makes me feel better as we have a little wiggle room yet tonight and next weekend at home against UMass Lowell. THANKS!!
