DEL is a professional hockey league in Germany. Good to see Tom Larkin and the Spink twins are playing together again! Also good to see that Ben Raymond and Alex DiPaolo are still playing together in Maine. By the way, the Maine Mariners are affilated with the Boston Bruins!

And as for tonight, we earned another 3 points in the standings with a 2-1 win over RPI. We scored the go-ahead goal in the 3rd period, then successfully killed a 5 minute major penalty. Then RPI pulled the goalie with 2 and a half minutes remaining and we were able to successfully defend the 6 on 5.

The Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) is the top division in German ice hockey . At its founding in 1994, it was the first German professional league whose operations were run by an operating company and whose clubs outsourced their professional teams to limited liability companies . The DEL Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (DEL Operating Company Ltd.) is now legally, economically, and organizationally independent and is an association of the DEL clubs. Its predecessor was the Eishockey-Bundesliga (Ice Hockey Bundesliga), which existed between 1958 and ‘94. The Eisbären Berlin are the record holders of the DEL with eleven German championships. The DEL's headquarters, the so-called league office, is located in Neuss.

In March of 2001, I was fortunate to see Esa Tikkanen play for the Essen Mosquitoes when Klaus Schmeh took me to a DEL game. It was one of Esa’s final professional hockey games.

A win is a win, but I was surprised to see the closeness of tonight’s game against RPI. Apparently Union played Cornell tough tonight at Lynah (whose ice held up), so tomorrow’s Union at Colgate game should be very interesting. Hopefully we will up our game.
 
I was very impressed by the penalty kill on the five minute major. I don’t think RPI had a single quality chance; it seemed like no shots at all. Obviously, that was the turning point in the game.

Huge opportunity tonight. Make it a clean two weekend sweep at home. And beat a quality opponent.

Reid Dyck led Colgate out onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warmup. Andrew Takacs and Nick Haas are also in gear. Cameron Korpi did the same for Union.

Miscue by Union defenseman results in goal by Easton Wainwright. Unassisted.

Great team effort by Colgate 23 seconds later resulted in a goal by Robby Newton from Owen Neuharth.

Game is talent SNY which means two timeouts per period.

And good teamwork by Union resulted in them getting on the scoreboard.

Colgate 11, Union 7, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, Union 1, score after one.

We are letting them back into the game.

Colgate penalty (hooking). 18-14 SOG in favor of Union going in. Killed. 19-14 SOG going out.

Union penalty (goaltender interference). Killed.

Seconds later, Union scored. Reid Dyck will want that one back.

Another Colgate penalty (face mask). And Union scored immediately.

Union penalty (boarding) with one minute remaining in the period. Seconds later, a second Union penalty (high sticking).

3:37 remaining. Nerve wracking.
And Union tied in up. After controversial icing call on Colgate.

Now 4-4. 1:52 remaining. 1:15 remaining. 0:23 with Union icing. 0:08. Going to OverTime.

If there was ever a game where both combatants deserved a draw, me thinks tonight’s contest was it. Shots on goal were close (36-34 Union). Penalties were close (5-3 Union). Both teams had opportunities where the net appeared to be wide open and they just couldn’t put it home.
On to East Lansing…
